Abstract(s)
For the protection and conservation of the environment, sustainable development is being faithfully propagated as a possibility for the improvement of life. The deterioration of the environment and public health is also related to industrial pollution, which has been worsening every day, and consequently, forcing a new attitude from the companies in order to decrease the significant environmental impacts caused by manufacturers of chemicals such as paints and varnishes, which are usually more toxic than other types of products. In this sense, with the lack of a research in the Portuguese literature involving a study of a large number of Portuguese manufacturers of paints intended for civil construction, approximately 60% of the companies of paints in Portugal, and to verify the environmental thinking that these Portuguese industries have, this work aims to examine the level of environmental commitment of paint manufacturers and to analyse the environmental approach for most of these industries, with respect to their dimensions. Thus, after the development of a theoretical structure with the aid of the bibliographical research, that should include the main points of paint manufacturing for construction, from the purchase of raw materials, production process and product application, highlighting the possible toxicity that these steps may present, and the influence on human health. After detailed research on the manufacturing process of the paint and its toxicity, it was necessary to sample the largest number of companies for the continuation of this work. For this purpose, 41 Portuguese companies from different regions of the country provided their answers to a questionnaire created exclusively for this research, replying either by email or, in some cases, personally. The date from the questionnaires was organized using Excel and the software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, SPSS (IBM Ā®), version 22.0. The latter software was used mainly to perform all the necessary statistical analysis, and to perform the tests of hypotheses, which were extremely important for the results and conclusions found in this work. Briefly, after all the results obtained through field and exploratory research, led us to realize that there are industries that show a certain commitment to the environment, getting representatives from small, medium and large dimensions. However, most of the companies analysed did not demonstrate to have an environmental commitment, missing sectors and activities essential to minimise some environmental impacts, and to act in the manufacturing reduction of products with a high level of toxicity.
