Abstract(s)
incapacidade com aquelas cujas crianças apresentam desenvolvimento típico;
A fim
Síndrome de Down.
escolhas.
Based on principles of child-centered pedagogy, this study aims to analyze (a) parental perceptions of the importance and easiness on the implementation of choice-making opportunities in familiar context, comparing families of children in situations of disability with those Whose children have typical development; And (b) examine the impact of the implementation, in family context, of an intervention program focused on the expansion of choice-making opportunities, on the participation of a child with additional support needs. In order to respond to the first goal, 74 parents (26 of families of children with disabilities and 48 of children without disabilities) were responded to a survey. In order to investigate the effects of the intervention program, a single case study, type AB, was developed, evaluating its impact on the participation of a 2-year-old child with Down's Syndrome. The results suggest that the parents consider very important to promote principles related to child-centered practices, although the easiness of implementation is significantly lower, especially in the case of families of children with disabilities. The barriers in the implementation of choice opportunities are related to the dynamics of the family routine, the characteristics of the child and the need of instruction. In the single case study, the creation of choice opportunities promoted the involvement and interaction of the child. The data collected seem to underline the importance of supporting the structuring of family routines that integrate choice-making opportunities as well as the identification of strategies that support choices-making.
