Identity is built around the set of learnings acquired over time, ranging from basic information, such as one's name or the name of family members, which is necessary in the long term, to information whose relevance is only temporary. Memory is a complex process responsible for retaining and accessing this content. It cannot be considered reliable or objective, as it is subject to factors such as interpretation, emotional state, or external stimuli; nevertheless, it contributes to the attribution of meaning to surrounding elements, becoming one of the pillars of human existence. In art, the key to uniqueness, connection, and immersiveness is individual expression. As such, identity, and consequently memory, are fundamental to artistic creation. Cinema, and especially documental cinema due to its authentic nature, transcends entertainment. It acts as a social, cultural, and ideological reflection, and may be concerned with conveying a message, but this message is always subject to the bias of the director's perspective. It is a living organism of preservation, constantly tasked with analyzing and representing archives, to reconstruct the past and produce new records that will carry the present to future generations. This project aims to reflect on the role of documentary cinema in preserving collective and individual identity. Memory is crucial to the notion of identity and is considered to be the basis, or root, of biographical materialization and subsequent artistic production. To investigate these issues, interviews were conducted with experts in the fields of memory and the arts, alongside a review of relevant literature on the highlighted (and related) topics. Films (fictional and non-fictional) dealing with the practical application of memory as a narrative source were also analyzed. Finally, a documentary was directed, focusing on a single character who gives voice to generational memories and represents a community.
