Abstract(s)
The Port of Leixões constitutes a multifaceted heritage that reflects not only the historical, economic, and industrial evolution of the northern region of Portugal, but also the construction of collective memories linked to its development. The research focuses on the enhancement of the documentary and photographic heritage under the responsibility of the Administration of the Ports of Douro, Leixões and Viana do Castelo (APDL), recognizing its essential role in preserving and disseminating the port history of Leixões. Through the analysis of various sources (plans, photographic images, expansion projects, and bibliographic references), an integrated narrative of the port is constructed, highlighting the close relationship between the community, the APDL, and the industrial and cultural heritage of the territory. The distinctive contribution of this dissertation lies in combining historical, social, economic, and urban analysis, particularly through the critical reading of photographic sources, which allows for a more direct understanding of the urban, social, economic, and cultural impacts of port expansion on the everyday life of local communities. The study also proposes the creation of an Interpretive Centre of the Port of Leixões, understood as a space for preservation, communication, and cultural mediation between the port and the community. This proposal, supported by visual representations developed using artificial intelligence, seeks to concretely and accessibly illustrate the heritage and educational potential of the project, reinforcing the importance of integrating port memory within a museological and interpretive context.
