Abstract(s)
The multifaceted nature of pop-up books implies an also multifaceted approach, from the designers that make them, relating to various fields of Graphic Design, namely illustration, paper engineering and Editorial Design. The present study and editorial project, aimed to develop a pop-up book, throughout all the stages of its making, namely its idealization, planning, production, and construction. Methodologically, in an initial phase, through literature review it intended to trace back the beginnings of the pop-up book, having it made possible, to determine its remote origins and wide range of purposes, all while contrasting them with contemporary popups. By the analysis developed, it also aimed to determine which characteristics and benefits distinguish and legitimise them from other books, highlighting their capacity to encourage reading, as the main goal of this project. With this in mind, further research was made, with the intention of finding gaps regarding reading levels in Portugal, and later establish a connection between them and the gaps in the national market. In a second phase, the development of an editorial object is presented, using design project development methodologies, in its various phases, from research, from concept to creative exploration, to detailing and finishes. The result consisted of an adaptation of Roald Dahl´s The Witches, resulting in a final product filled with purpose, that demanded skills in various Graphic Design fields, and thanks to its theoretical foundation, aimed to meet the issues found during research.
