Abstract(s)
The aim of the present study was to assess the perspective of undergraduate music students on music performance anxiety and, thus, to verify whether the results are compatible with the existing literature or add new useful information for the progress of scientific investigation of the condition concerned. The data collection was made through a survey designed for the purpose of this study and was attended by 39 students from Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo (ESMAE) of Instituto Politécnico do Porto. After analyzing the results, it was found that most participants (84.65%) reported that they usually feel anxious about musical performance and that the degree of it differs depending on the situation (97.4%), and the context that creates the most anxiety is that of solo performance, followed by group performance and, finally, individual practice. The results of the study suggest not only that the context that creates the most anxiety is solo performance, but that within solo performances the one that creates the most anxiety is the competition situation. Regarding the types of group performances, the results suggest that the one that creates the most anxiety is the recital of chamber music/combo situation. A clear majority of respondents reported that anxiety does have an impact on performance (92.3%), while reporting that this impact is negative (86.1%). Given the results, the need emerges to properly inform musicians of the existence of the most effective current types of strategies and treatments to address anxiety in music performance and apply them effectively to an educational context such as the one of a Music College.
