Abstract(s)
Swearwords are a part of the vocabulary of a native speaker of every language. Its usage depends, among others, on linguistic, pragmatic, cultural, stylistic and idiossincratic conditions, which make their translation a challenge one must not take lightly. This Thesis’ priority is to present suggestions to answer this question, bearing in mind the elementary role the target audience plays in the translator’s decision-making process. In order to accomplish this, this work is supported by two key elements: the first one was the construction of a questionnaire which allowed us to caracterize and evaluate a target audience and the second one was based on an analysis of original texts in Portuguese, written by Miguel Esteves Cardoso. However, an extended analysis will not be carried out, since the consultation of these texts has been a means to validate some of the translation choices made. The explanation of the selected translation options will not only include the description of the procedures, but also the thought process involved in it. There will also be a part dedicated to other challenges that had to be met during this process, since it is considered to be an asset to this Thesis. Finally, the work developed shall allow for the evaluation of the importance of the target audience’s role, as well as demonstrate the processes a translator might have to overcome so as to make the best decision possible in each of his/her translation contexts.
