Abstract(s)
The present project intends to understand the design of the postage stamp and its elements of valorization that, even considering all technological advances, remain practically similar to the present day. As a consequence of such research, we developed a philatelic issue that pays tribute to José Saramago, in the year of commemoration of his 100th anniversary. Regarding the division of the document, we carried two paths, and developed the theme in both theoretical and practical perspectives. Methodologically, this research starts through the path of the postage stamp, as a diffuser of history and culture, full of distinct traits that characterize it. In order to analyze postage stamp, vast research was carried out both in books, personal collections of CTT (Post Office, Telegraphs and Telephones), online search engines, and in projects of Portuguese designers/authors, with the purpose of collecting important information within this context. Subsequently, a comparative visual analysis was performed to stamps developed by the mentioned designers/ authors, in order to perceive and study their historical and graphic evolution, as well as their role in today's society. Ultimately, surveys were carried out in order to collect real and concrete data about the object under study. The research previously developed, allowed to discover, and recognize the most relevant aspects and that praise a postage stamp. It was therefore also possible to perceive its characteristics as a transmitting vehicle, capable of reaching a larger number of people. The present project reveals positive results, in the sense that it allows to expand and acquire knowledge around the postage stamp, its characteristics and forms of use. With this in mind, the research grants a reflection on its important role in society, confirming that it is an object that has reached a singular, historical and cultural value, becoming collected and cared for with detail, all without ever losing its main function.
