Abstract(s)
The increasing digitisation of financial services has driven the adoption of digital payment systems in Portugal. This study aims to analyse the factors that influence the perception and adoption of these systems by adapting the UTAUT theoretical model to the specific context of Portuguese users. Although originally designed for organisational environments, the UTAUT model has been adjusted to understand the dynamics of individual use, considering the dimensions of perceived efficiency, perceived security, perceived accessibility and perceived costs. Based on a quantitative approach, a survey was conducted with 425 participants, and the data were analysed using multiple linear regression and structural equation models. Specific objectives included analysing the mutual influences between the four theoretical dimensions and empirically testing the proposed relationships. The results reveal that perceived efficiency and accessibility have a positive and significant impact on the adoption of digital payment systems. Security proved to be relevant, including as a mediating variable. On the other hand, perceived costs did not have the expected negative effect, suggesting a reinterpretation of their role as a barrier to adoption. Statistically significant differences between sociodemographic groups, especially in terms of educational level, reinforce the importance of digital literacy. The study provides relevant contributions to academia, regulators and service providers by offering a validated model for understanding the adoption of financial technologies and proposing practical guidelines for designing more effective and inclusive digital solutions.
