Abstract(s)
comum, impactando diversas faixas etárias, incluindo as crianças. Alguns dados do
As
The use of social media has increasingly become a common practice, impacting various age groups, including children. Data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) indicate a rise in digital skills among the Portuguese population and an increase in social media participation. This study investigated the potential impacts of social media on the development and education of children, employing a mixed methodology that included literature reviews and field research with surveys conducted with parents/guardians of children aged between 12 months and 10 years. The research revealed that most parents use social media daily. Notably, only 55.2% of the children studied use these platforms, mainly YouTube Kids and TikTok, with usage generally limited to less than three hours daily. The benefits of social media include strengthening social bonds, stimulating creativity, and developing communication and empathy skills. However, significant risks are also highlighted: exposure to inappropriate content, interactions with strangers, cyberbullying, negative impacts on mental and physical health, distraction from responsibilities, and development of dependency on technology and mobile devices. Therefore, parental supervision has become crucial. Many parents have adopted practices such as active supervision, setting usage rules, and educating about online risks. This study highlights the dual aspects of social media in children's lives: while offering opportunities for cognitive development, they also present significant challenges requiring careful management. The findings suggest the need for a balanced approach to combine the benefits of social media with strategies to mitigate its usage risks.
