Abstract(s)
In the last few years, the number of music festivals being held worldwide have increased in a significant number. These festivals are diverse and present a variety of music genres, to celebrate the local culture and traditions. That being, there are several motives that make a visitor participate in the event and the impacts that an event of this dimension has on the destination are unquestionable. This research aims to study music events, in particular the Rock in Rio festival, and to understand the motivations that lead visitors to participate in this event, as well as the impacts at the destination where it is held. From this perspective, the main objective of this study is to understand the existence of sustainable practices in the Rock in Rio event and their impact on the destination. For this effect the qualitative methodology was used. To guarantee a more complete study guidelines with questions related to the several topics in study were sent to members of Turismo de Portugal and entrepreneurs from hotel units in Lisbon. Considering that social sustainability is a topic still underdeveloped in scientific studies, more specifically when related to music events, this study will bring new contributions to the scientific area. The main results from the research highlight that the event Rock in Rio impacts positively and negatively the destination Lisbon, being that the most evident impacts are the positive ones related with the promotion of the destination, supply development and creation of a destination image. Although the sustainability topic is already on our day- to-day life, the sustainable practices are not yet noticeable in events as they are in the destination, more specifically in the hospitality sector. However, they are already defined as valuable element for the selection of destinations and events.
