Um dos desafios que os jovens com necessidades adicionais de suporte enfrentam corresponde à
transição para o emprego ou atividade ocupacional. A transição da escola para a vida pós-escolar
é um processo longo e não linear que tende a complexificar-se em situações específicas como são
o caso dos jovens com necessidades adicionais de suporte. Por um lado, verifica-se que estes
jovens tendem a apresentar dificuldades acrescidas no acesso ao emprego ou a uma atividade
ocupacional, enfrentando obstáculos de natureza diversa. Por outro lado, o trabalho assume hoje
um papel central na vida dos indivíduos, contribuindo para a sua realização pessoal, o seu
desenvolvimento cognitivo e motor e o sentido de pertença a uma dada comunidade bem como
para a sua autonomia, independência e autodeterminação, aspetos reconhecidamente essenciais
na vida dos indivíduos. Por conseguinte, é essencial a existência de serviços e mecanismos de
apoio ao emprego que facilitem a transição para a vida pós-escolar, em especial de jovens com
necessidades adicionais de suporte. Os Centros de Atividades Ocupacionais constituem uma
resposta possível que tem em vista ajudar e apoiar os jovens na integração socioprofissional.
Assim, consideramos ser importante perceber de que forma é que estes centros facilitam a
transição dos jovens para a vida pós-escolar. O presente estudo pretendeu analisar as
experiências de transição para a vida ativa de pessoas integradas em Centros de Atividades
Ocupacionais, de acordo com a perspetiva das mesmas bem como dos profissionais dos
respetivos centros. Para o efeito, foram realizadas entrevistas a 3 diretoras e a 20 utentes de 3
Centros de Atividades Ocupacionais do grupo central do Arquipélago dos Açores. Foram
analisados 3 eixos temáticos principais, a saber: Transição, Centros de Atividades Ocupacionais e
Emprego. Verificou-se que os participantes destacam a importância do emprego e do trabalho nas
suas vidas, apresentando experiências diversificadas de transição. Neste processo, identificam
fatores diversos que contribuem para uma experiência positiva de transição como sejam o apoio
dos pares, da família e de supervisores. Destaca-se, pois, o papel dos Centros de Atividades
Ocupacionais como serviços de suporte relevantes na experiência de transição para a vida ativa.
One of the challenges that young people with additional support needs face is the transition to employment or occupational activity. The transition from school to post-school life is a long, nonlinear process that tends to become complex in specific situations, such as young people with additional support needs. On the one hand, these young people tend to present greater difficulties in acess to employment or to an occupational activity, facing obstacles of different nature. On the other hand, in nowadays, the work plays a central role in individuals’ life, contributing to their personal fulfillment, cognitive and motor development and sense of belonging to a given community as well as to their autonomy, independence and selfdetermination, aspects recognized as essential in the individuals’ lives. It is therefore essential to have employment support services and mechanisms to facilitate the transition to post-school life, especially for young people with additional support needs. The Occupational Activity Centers are a possible response to help and support young people in socio-professional integration. Thus, we consider it is important to realize how these centers facilitate the transition of young people to post-school life. This study aimed to analyze the experiences of transition to the active life of people integrated in Occupational Activity Centers, according to their perspectives as the professionals perspectives. For this purpose, interviews were conducted with 3 directors and 20 users of 3 Occupational Activity Centers of the central group of the Archipelago of the Azores. Three main thematic axes were analyzed: Transition, Occupational Activity Centers and Employment. It was found that the participants emphasized the importance of employment and work in their lives, presenting diversified experiences of transition. In this process, they identify diverse factors that contribute to a positive transition experience such as peer support, family support, and supervisors. Therefore, the role of the Occupational Activity Centers as relevant support services in the transition to active life experience is highlighted.
