Abstract(s)
One of the strategies to protect against the corrosion, being one of the most importante socioeconomic problem, is to apply paint schemes, ensuring a long durability of the properties of the structure where they have been applied. The goal of this work was to develop and characterize one single component, waterbased and direct to metal paint with high performance regarding corrosion protection and evaluate its economic viability, when compared with conventional solvent systems. The project may be divided on two main phases: i) characterization of the paint systems available on the market and ii) selection of the coalescent agent, the dispersant agent, the thickener and the anticorrosion additive indicated for each one of the five tested. To choose the coalescent agent, tests were performed to determinate the minimum temperature for film formation. The coalescent agent 4 was, almost in all the resins, the most efficient, needing less quantity to achieve the temperature of 0ĀŗC. Also, the behavior of the mixture, resin and coalescent agent, was assessed and the best results were achieved with the coalescent agent 2 bringing more hardness to the film after the complete cure. The selection of the dispersing agent, the thickener and the anticorrosion additive was based on adhesion, gloss and the neutral salt spray tests. The dispersant agentes exhibited very different behaviors, interacting differently with the resins. The rheology modifier thickener number 3 was the most suitable for four of the five tested resins. Concerning the anticorrosion additives, the additive B stand out, for the positive results achieved in the corrosion and in the accelerated aging tests. Based on the collected data, over the entire project, regarding the characterization assays, the R3.4.3.4. formulation was the best one to attain the proposed goals. This formulation is composed by the resin 3, the dispersant agent 4, the thickener 3 and the anticorrosion additive B (with a concentration of 2,5%(m/m)). This formulation reached 480 h in the neutral salt spray test, being in line with the results performed by the monocomponent systems existing on Barbot S.A.. Moreover, it was verified that the production of the formulated paint is economically viable, filling up o gap on the available products, showing valuable technical and economical characteristics, having fulfilled the goal for this project.
