Abstract(s)

The fundamental aim of this study is to understand the motivations and difficulties experienced by social entrepreneurship initiatives that operate internationally, understanding how Portuguese NGDO registered with Camões, I.P. have developed their internationalization process, without neglecting the mission they wish to provide and the impact and social value they wish to emerge both in the destination country and on a global level. In this sense, we reviewed the relevant literature dedicated to this theme and carried out an empirical study with the adoption of a qualitative methodological approach, through a semi-structured interview, based on a script developed with 19 questions, which was conducted to the heads of seven NGDO that made up the sample. The results obtained showed that the majority of social organizations are driven to internationalization by confrontation with local needs, awareness of the community situation, and the situation of permanent need in the destination country. Regarding the main difficulties experienced, it was found that the organizations are unanimous and that they generally point to the same factors, such as funding/governmental support, bureaucracy, corruption, government/entity collaboration, and weakened basic infrastructure. The results aim to understand how internationalization theories are able to explain the motivations for the internationalization process of Portuguese NGDO. It was possible to ascertain the suitability of Network Theory in explaining the internationalization process followed in the social field, not leaving aside Uppsala Theory and Born Globals, which also allow, albeit in part, an understanding of the internationalization of this type of organization. Understanding how internationalization theories are able to explain the motivations for the internationalization process of Portuguese NGDO.
