Abstract(s)
This dissertation focuses on the technical-interpretative analysis of Vladimir Cosma's āEuphonium Concertoā, with the main focus on its historical background and the comparative study between the interpretation as recorded on the CDās of Steven Mead and Adam Frey. This concerto, written in 1997, is an iconic work in the repertoire for euphonium and symphony orchestra. The research begins with a historical contextualization of the concerti for euphonium and orchestra of the 1990s, followed by the life and work of Vladimir Cosma. This theoretical framework also covers the Guebwiller competition, which commissioned this work, the descriptive analysis of the work and its relationship with Cosma's own film soundtracks. Finally, different examples of technical-interpretative analysis are presented. This study involves the transcription and technical-interpretative analysis of selected excerpts from the recordings of Steven Mead and Adam Frey, based on active and repeated listening. The parameters analyzed include tempo (pulse), rhythmic precision, timbre, articulation, dynamics, phrasing and breathing. In this way, a comparative study of these interpretations is presented, highlighting the interpretative choices of each performer. With this dissertation, I intend to understand the context of the āEuphonium Concertoā in the work of V. Cosma, deepen my ability to transcribe excerpts from recordings into sheet music and learn about the interpretative choices of Steven Mead and Adam Frey, with the aim of helping other interpreters in the performance of this work. The research culminates with the performance of the concerto in my final master's recital, applying the knowledge and conclusions obtained during the study.
