O presente trabalho, realizado no âmbito do Mestrado em Tradução e Interpretação
Especializadas, traduz do português para o francês a obra "O Outro Lado do Caminho –
Codex Calixtinus" de Carlos Alexandre Barbosa Clemente e reflete criticamente sobre os
desafios e estratégias deste processo. A obra, publicada em 2022, combina testemunhos
reais de peregrinos do Caminho de Santiago, uma narrativa de suspense e investigação
histórica sobre o manuscrito medieval Codex Calixtinus. Esta diversidade textual e riqueza
cultural exigiram uma abordagem tradutória flexível e fundamentada teoricamente.
Este projeto baseou-se no modelo funcionalista de Christiane Nord para análise prétradutória
e na dicotomia domesticação-estrangeirização de Lawrence Venuti e Antoine
Berman para orientar as decisões culturais. A metodologia incluiu análise de fatores
extratextuais e intratextuais, criação de glossários especializados sobre terminologia
jacobeia e aplicação de estratégias diferenciadas conforme o tipo de texto. A escolha do
francês justifica-se pela forte ligação histórica e cultural da França ao Caminho de Santiago.
Os principais desafios incluíram preservar a naturalidade dos testemunhos, transpor
expressões idiomáticas sem equivalentes diretos, adaptar a complexidade sintática do autor
às convenções francesas e tratar referências culturais específicas. Este trabalho demonstra
que a tradução literária vai além da transferência linguística, constituindo um ato de
mediação cultural que exige sensibilidade e conhecimento profundo de ambas as culturas.
This work, carried out within the framework of the Master's degree in Specialized Translation and Interpretation, translates "O Outro Lado do Caminho – Codex Calixtinus" by Carlos Alexandre Barbosa Clemente from Portuguese to French and critically reflects on the challenges and strategies of this process. The work, published in 2022, combines real testimonies from pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, a suspense narrative, and historical research on the medieval manuscript Codex Calixtinus. This textual diversity and cultural richness required a flexible and theoretically grounded translation approach. This project was based on Christiane Nord's functionalist model for pre-translation analysis and on the domestication-foreignization dichotomy by Lawrence Venuti and Antoine Berman to guide cultural decisions. The methodology included analysis of extratextual and intratextual factors, creation of specialized glossaries on Jacobean terminology, and application of differentiated strategies according to text type. The choice of French is justified by France's strong historical and cultural connection to the Camino de Santiago. The main challenges included preserving the naturalness of the testimonies, transposing idiomatic expressions without direct equivalents, adapting the author's syntactic complexity to French conventions, and handling specific cultural references. This work demonstrates that literary translation goes beyond linguistic transfer, constituting an act of cultural mediation that requires sensitivity and deep knowledge of both cultures.
