Abstract(s)
Due to the nature of the existing distribution network in Portugal, the air switches are na essential element for the grid management. These remain the fastest way to achieve overhead lines visible isolation, allowing the teams on the ground to work safely. In many cases, where there are no other equipment’s that can achieve overhead lines isolation, these remain essential for the detection of malfunctions. So, it is in the interest of EDP Distribuição to know the fault rates in these organs/the root causes of the faults, and also, to speed up the process of finding the most suitable type of air switch that we be installed at specific locations of the MT (medium voltage) grid, tripolar versus unipolar. To achieve these two purposes this dissertation was divided into two core components; The first is a study concerning the annual fault rates and the root causes of the fault, during the years 2013 and 2017 that have occurred in air switch s installed in the overhead lines of MT in the AMN (North Maintenance Area). The second is the creation of a computer application that will fasten the choosing process of the air switch type to be installed or replaced according with the location and function in the grid. Considering the internal legislation defined by EDP Distribuição, the application will select the most suitable air switch to be used.
