Abstract(s)
For a physical-chemical analysis laboratory to produce reliable results, test methods must be constantly evaluated to guarantee not only their suitability and quality but also the comparability of analytical results. The evaluation and validation of test methods grew in line with the concept of quality, which are highly important in the industrial sector. In the analysis laboratories responsible for issuing results, which often influence process steps or evaluate their efficiency, the reliability of the results is crucial, and they are often subject to regulation, as is the case of laboratories accredited to monitoring water state chemistry. Águas de Valongo, S.A. is responsible for the operation of several WWTP, being obliged to present to the Portuguese Environment Agency the analytical bulletins that prove the efficiency and compliance with the emission limits following the legislation in force. The company's laboratory, daily control analyses are carried out at the WWTPs in Campo-Valongo, Ermesinde, Alfena (Nossa Senhora do Amparo), and at the mini-WWTP in Palmilheira. Control analyses focus on parameters with emission limit values established in Decree-Law no. 236/98 of the Portuguese constitution and on parameters of interest that help to control eventual changes to the treatment process. Chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand after 5 days, total suspended solids, fixed suspended solids, volatile suspended solids, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus were the parameters evaluated and for which a quality control plan was established internal analytics. The implementation of the quality control system will involve the consumption of resources, namely reagents, and a cost estimate has been carried out for its operation. The quality of the sampling was also considered, within the scope of the work carried out because without ensuring the proper collection of the samples, their transport, and conservation (preservation) it will not be possible to generate quality results that correctly meet the established requirements
