Abstract(s)
The tourism sector is growing, on a national level but also on a global level. In the recent decades there has been an exponential growth both on the demand side, with the increase in tourist arrivals, national and international, to the destinations, and on the supply side, where there is an increasingly number of attractions, tourist services, tourist accommodations and hotel and restaurant services. Porto is no exception, the city is increasingly seen and sought as a tourism destination for several Portuguese people and foreigners. This growth led to the appearance of many positive changes, but also negative ones. Therefore, the present study aims to understand how the (negative) tourism impacts will affect the residents. More specifically, it is intended to understand how the perceptions of Sé residents towards tourism will affect their quality of life. The used methodology relies on a case study, where the quantitative approach is carried out, based on the application of surveys about the residents’ perceptions and the impacts felt in their quality of life. The results obtained through the answers of 234 residents show that 45% of the respondents feel the tourism affects the presented items, that 72% of the respondents are satisfied with the conditions of the surrounding environment and 81% have a good quality of life. Therefore, it is expected that the present research work might contribute to the growth of the tourism research and help tourism destinations managers, regulators and organizations, and also the public sector and the social area to understand the tourism sector problematics in a better way, in order to create and develop measures which protect the inhabitants and the material and immaterial heritage of the area under study.
