The main goal of a water supply systems is always to ensure that water is supplied to consumers with adequate quality and enough quantity, as well as effectively and efficiently. The utilities managing these systems are increasingly being held responsible for the proper functioning of their infrastructures, for complying with stakeholders’ expectations and, also, for meeting the requirements of norms and regulations. Water abstraction is the first phase of the urban water cycle. Any problem at the source may affect the remaining phases. The good performance of this infrastructures is closely related to the quantity and quality of water sources. Therefore, it is essential to understand the water body where each catchment is located, the assets of each catchment’s infrastructure, as well as assessing its condition and performance. This work aims to evaluate the performance and risk of failure of the eight water abstraction infrastructures of Águas do Douro e Paiva, S.A., taking advantage of asset management tools. The activities developed during the curricular internship by the author were, briefly, the following ones: collecting of information on how the captures are designed and functioning, filling out the report and registion of function of Assessment (RFA) for each abstraction unit (based on the model provided by the company) and the risk of failure analysis for each catchment. The present work made it possible to identify how the understanding of the initial design of the infrastructures and their functioning is essential for the implementation of the following stages of Asset Management, namely in terms of applying this detailed knowledge of the assets that make the catchments, condition assessment, risk analysis and prioritization of the interventions over assets. In this way, the score obtained in the RFA’s will be as adjusted as possible and will reflect the real state of catchment. It is also concluded it is possible to apply to water abstractions a methodology identical to that used for other company assets, namely the pumping stations, which meets the company’s objectives. In addition, the risk analyzes carried out made it possible to extract information on the risk levels of the company’s catchments, useful for the subsequent steps associated with future investments.
