Lapis Lazuli foi escrito em Julho de 1936, três anos antes da morte de William Butler Yeats, e
incluído nos seus Last Poems (1936-1939). Relaciona uma peça em lápis lazuli, datada do período Ch’ien
Lung (entre 1731 e 1795) e oferecida a Yeats aquando do seu septuagésimo aniversário, com a convicção
de que a tragédia, individual e pública, deve ser enfrentada corajosa e alegremente:
Someone has sent me a present of a great piece carved by some Chinese sculptor into the semblance of a
mountain with temple, trees, paths and an ascetic or pupil about to climb the mountain. Ascetic, pupil, hard
stone, eternal theme of the sensual east. The heroic cry in the midst of despair. But I am wrong, the east has
its solutions always, and therefore knows nothing of tragedy. It is we, not the east, that must raise the heroic
cry.2
