This thesis investigates the relationship between accounting conservatism and audit fees in STOXX Europe 600 firms between 2018 and 2024. Conservatism is measured using an accrual-based index derived from the Kothari model, while the logarithm of audit fees is used as a proxy for audit effort and audit quality. The empirical analysis is based on panel data estimated through multivariate regressions with industry-by-year fixed effects and firm-clustered standard errors. The models include the traditional determinants of audit fees, ensuring that the estimated effect of conservatism is isolated from structural economic factors. The results indicate a positive and statistically significant association between conservatism and audit fees. A one-standard-deviation increase in the conservatism index is associated, on average, with a 6â7% increase in audit fees. The control variables generally display the expected signs, and the Big 4 indicator is not statistically significant once the remaining factors are considered. This study contributes to recent European evidence by showing that more prudent accounting practices are associated with more intensive audit work.
