Abstract(s)
Music has a well known positive effect in reasoning and in the performance of many tasks. One of these tasks is surgical activity. In literature one can find several studies concerning the effect of music in the operating theatre of different surgical specialties, but none dedicated to Orthopaedics. For this reason, an online survey was proposed to orthopaedic surgions in order to investigate their music listening habits in the Operating Theatre. This study had 67 participants. The survey showed that 92,5% of respondents usually hear music during the surgical act as well as during other intelectual activities such as reading, studing and preparing scientific work. Rock and Pop Music are the most elegible styles in Operating Theatre. The choice is mostly done by senior orthopaedic surgions and it is not related to the surgical technique. Only 33,9% consider that music improves surgical technique. Although music is listened to at a low volume, 16,1% of the respondents ask to turn it off and 72,6% ask to lower the volume even more, considering that music interferes negatively in concentration and comunication.
