dc.description.abstractStephen King é um dos escritores norte-americanos mais populares, nos géneros do terror, sobrenatural e fantasia. Neste artigo, pretende-seenumerar, exemplificar e analisar os mecanismos empregues por King para apavorar o leitor, no conto “The Man in the Black Suit”. Focar-se-ãoaspetos como o narrador autodiegético, o lugar isolado, as personagens antagónicas da criança e do arquetípico demónio, e a estrutura do enredo. Metodologicamente,recorre-sea diversos especialistas na obra de King e, naturalmente, à opinião críticado autor do artigo.Os resultados provamque, no texto analisado, Kingcombinou, com êxito, diferentes técnicas de escrita criativa, relacionadas com o uso do espaço, o significado simbólico das personagens e o suspensecrescente, para proporcionar ao leitor uma experiência realista e assustadora.Em conclusão, trata-se de uma pequena obra-prima no género de terror, suscetível de continuar a magnetizar o interesse da comunidade crítica e literária no futuro.pt_PT
dc.description.abstractStephen King is one of the most popular writers in the genres of terror, supernatural and fantasy. In this article, weintend to enumerate, exemplify, and analyze the mechanisms used by King, in the short story “The Man in the Black Suit”. Wewill focus onaspects like the irst-person narrator, the isolated place, the antagonistic characters of the child and the archetypical devil, and to the structure of the plot. To our study, weresort to several specialists in the oeuvre of the author and, naturally, to ourcritical opinion.The results prove that, in the analyzed short story, Kingsuccessfullycombinedseveral creative writing techniques, related to the use ofsetting, symbolic meaning of characters and growing suspense,to offer the reader a realistic and frightening experience. In conclusion, this is a small masterpiece in the genre of terror, likely to keep magnetizing the interest of the reading and critical community in the future.pt_PT
