Validity of a new incremental step test for people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease: comparison with the incremental Shuttle Walking Test

| dc.description.abstract | A new incremental step test (IST) is a field test that was developed for people with chronic obstructive pulmonar disease (COPD), based on the characteristics of the incremental shuttle walking test (ISWT). The measurement properties of the IST still need to be determined, and, therefore, we aimed toasses the validity of the IST, through the comparision with ISWT, its within-day reliability ande measurement error in people with COPD. A cross-sectional study was conducted and participants attended two sessions to perform the IST and ISTW, separately. Spearman’s correlations were used to compare the performances between the IST and ISWT. Intraclass correlation coeficiente (ICC2,1), SE of measurement (SEM) and minimal detectable change at 95% CI (MDC95) were used for reliability and measurement error. The learning Effect was explored ith the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. 63 participants (67.5±10.5 years) were enrolled. IST was significant and strong correlated with the ISWT (0.72˂Ƿ˂0.74, Ƿ˂0.001). IST presented an ICC2,1=0.95 (95% CI 0.92 to 0.97), SEM=11.7 (18.9%) and MDC95=32.4 (52,2%) for the number of steps. No difference was observed between the two attempts of the IST (Ƿ˃0.05). IST can be suggested as a valid and reliable test to assess exercise capacity in COPD patients, with no learning Effect. However, the measurement error is still “indeterminate”. | |
