Fatores determinantes na atração de IDE no setor do turismo em Portugal

| dc.description.abstract | O setor do turismo tem se afirmado como um motor importante para o crescimento económico de Portugal. Simultaneamente, o investimento direto estrangeiro (IDE), desempenha um papel importante no financiamento de infraestruturas e serviços turísticos, particularmente em países com recursos financeiros limitados para investir em infraestruturas turísticas. Portugal é um destino turístico consolidado e continua a registar aumentos significativos no número de visitantes, e consequentemente nas receitas associadas ao turismo. Neste sentido, este estudo pretende contribuir e complementar a literatura sobre os determinantes do IDE no setor do turismo. Para alcançar os objetivos, este estudo utilizou uma metodologia quantitativa, recorrendo à análise econométrica dos dados, por meio do modelo de regressão linear (OLS). A amostra é composta por dados do período temporal entre 2008 e 2023, os dados foram recolhidos através da base de dados oficial do Banco de Portugal, do Banco Mundial, PORDATA, Eurostat e INE. As variáveis em estudo incluem indicadores macroeconómicos, indicadores institucionais e setoriais. Na análise efetuada verifica-se que o crescimento económico, a estabilidade macroeconómica, as infraestruturas turísticas e a procura turística, possuem uma influência positiva e estatisticamente significativa com os fluxos de IDE no setor do turismo português, ao passo que a estabilidade política, o capital humano e o desempenho económico do país, ao contrário do que diz a literatura, possuem uma influência negativa sobre os fluxos de IDE. Este estudo contribui assim para complementar a literatura sobre o investimento direto estrangeiro no setor do turismo em Portugal e levantar algumas pistas para discussão futura no setor do turismo. | dc.description.abstract | The tourism sector has established itself as an important driver of Portugal's economic growth. At the same time, foreign direct investment (FDI) plays an important role in financing tourism infrastructure and services, particularly in countries with limited financial resources to invest in tourism infrastructure. Portugal is a well-established tourist destination and continues to experience significant increases in visitor numbers and, consequently, tourism-related revenues. Therefore, this study aims to contribute to and complement the literature on the determinants of FDI in the tourism sector. To achieve its objectives, this study used a quantitative methodology, using econometric analysis of data using a linear regression model (OLS). The sample consists of data from the period between 2008 and 2023, collected through the official databases of the Bank of Portugal, the World Bank, PORDATA, Eurostat, and INE. The variables studied include macroeconomic indicators, institutional indicators, and sectoral indicators. The analysis found that economic growth, macroeconomic stability, tourism infrastructure, and tourism demand have a positive and statistically significant influence on FDI flows in the Portuguese tourism sector. Contrary to what the literature suggests, political stability, human capital, and the country's economic performance have a negative influence on FDI flows. This study thus contributes to complementing the literature on foreign direct investment in the tourism sector in Portugal and provides insights for future discussions in the tourism sector. Analyzing the determinants of foreign direct investment in tourism allows us to formulate strategic recommendations to make Portugal more attractive to foreign investors, by focusing on quality infrastructure and macroeconomic stability. | eng |
