Abstract(s)
The present study seeks to study to, if possible, generate information and knowledge around the participation of people with disabilities in artistic life and the multiple effects that public presentations of their artwork have on society and on their lives. It is primarily based on rights and values, on the right to community participation and on the idea that art and culture are among the main pillars that underpin civilizations. Therefore, in a democratic and inclusive society, it is necessary to channel efforts to remove barriers that prevent this population from expressing themselves through their pieces of art. Art has mechanisms to reach the public and, consequently, society that can and should be made available to different layers of the population in the fight against exclusion, discrimination and indifference. To obtain knowledge on what is happening on this field at our local reality, a phenomenological study was carried out that collected data on a theatre show and a dance show in the town's main venue for performing arts. The public was invited to express their opinion, the artists to share how they experience the whole process of preparation and presentation of the show, the institution also revealed what motivates the team to organize the event annually for nine years. The data confirm the theoretical assumptions that defend art as a powerful tool for inclusion, a platform for valuing their human potential and a source of challenges and personal fulfilment.
