Abstract(s)
This report presents the Participatory Action Research Project designated “Active(mind) Golden Age”. It was developed with the participation of a group of older adults that attend the “Program Active Golden Age” promoted by the city hall of Gondomar. This project aimed at creating spaces for active citizenship and political participation in the local community in order to empower older adults. This purpose meets the Active Ageing Model proposed by the World Health Organization for the sake of an aging process in which health, participation and safety are ensured. It also promotes the improvement of the life quality of older adults (WHO, 2002). Therefore, the following main goals were defined: to enlarge not only the social network but also to ensure the formal and informal support of older adults; and to encourage older adults to develop community participation practices. Aiming to achieve the mentioned goals, three actions were performed: “Meet to Empower”; “The Sons Of The Land”; “There’s Still Place For Change”. Taking into consideration the performance of these actions, the desired transformation was considered to have been clearly achieved, once the group was constituted, a social network was built and an informal support among themselves was attained. At the same time, concerning the presentation of the play, it was possible to promote the interaction among the several members of the community. Thus, and taking into consideration that the participants recognized that the project was indeed promoting empowerment for the exercise of their citizenship, it is relevant to conclude that the ongoing of these intervention and investigation projects makes sense. Moreover, it allows not only to provoke active participation, but also to evaluate the impact of the Methodologies of Investigation and Participation Action, particularly the Oppressed Theatre in the intervention and promotion of Active Ageing.
