O universo simbólico da morte sofreu mudanças ao longo dos séculos não se podendo dissociar as mesmas dos poderes instituídos, religiosos ou seculares, eruditos ou populares. Devido à sua capacidade de seduzir e de encantar, a Música foi (e é) um dos principais veículos do exercício do poder simbólico. Este trabalho explora, de forma não sistemática, o uso da Música como instrumento de poder simbólico, reflecte sobre a mudança de atitudes face à morte e aborda algumas questões centrais sobre a importância da morte para o ser humano, como seja o lugar da morte na história da civilização ocidental, o fascínio que a morte exerce sobre o ser humano ou ainda o uso da morte como instrumento de terror, de legitimação e de dominação.
The symbolic universe of death suffered changes over the centuries and we can not disassociate them from the institutionalized powers, religious or secular, scholarly or popular. Due to its ability to seduce and charm, Music was (and it is) one of the main vehicles for the exercise of symbolic power. This paper explores, in a non-systematic way, the use of Music as an instrument of symbolic power, reflects on the changing attitudes towards death and discusses some key issues about the importance of death to humans, such as the place of death in the history of the Western civilization, the fascination that death has on humans or the use of death as an instrument of terror, legitimation and domination.
