Abstract(s)
The need to survive in the markets or to assume a competitive advantage are some of the main reasons why more and more organizations seek to implement a quality system according to the standard ISO 9001. This research aims to analyze the impact of the adoption of this standard on the financial performance of Portuguese companies in the furniture sector. To achieve this target, quantitative data from different sources and databases will be considered. To achieve information on Portuguese companies certified according to the international quality standards of the ISO 9000 series, the listings provided by the Portuguese Institute of Accreditation (IPAC) were used. In order to acquire the financial and economic data necessary for the preparation of the study, the SABI Database was used. A statistical treatment was applied to the data obtained through an appropriate software, IBM SPSS Statistics. Therefore, different models were tested in order to validate whether the certification impacts in any way the performance of the companies, which led to the achievement of conclusions. As a conclusion of the results of the empirical study, it is important to emphasize the fact that the certified companies of the furniture sector in the district of Braga, do not present a higher performance than the non-certified companies of the same sector and district. The analysis of financial indicators was also highlighted when confronted with variables such as age and size of the company, measured by the number of employees. This analysis also allowed to draw conclusions about the certified companies, and how their performance is influenced by the number of years operating in the market, and the number of employees.
