Abstract(s)
The shift work model has been showing itself as a solution to provide a wide range of goods and services. This working modality has been increased over the years, as it assumes itself as an efficient strategy to provide goods and services to the customer during more hours and more days. This research was carried out in order to measure the implications of shift work in the conciliation between work, personal life, family and marital life of the employees. Additionally, we tried to identify the perception of shift work employees, to understand their motivations for choosing this work model, to identify the impacts on the conciliation between work and life outside work, as well as to identify the strategies used by employees to promote conciliation, particularly between work and personal life. The methodology followed to achieve the goals delineated for this research was the qualitative approach. Therefore, 15 shift work employees belonging to three multinational companies in the food retail sector, who have been working in this regime for, at least, 2 years, have been interviewed. The results highlighted significant difficulties in balancing work and personal life, considering the time difference in the performance of the work. We have identified impacts on the physical and mental health, marital life, day-to-day management, and conflicting roles of shift work employees. Furthermore, we presented potential best practices proposed by the participants to mitigate the impacts detected and to increase the reasons for choosing this work regime. The results also demonstrate the importance of reviewing the existing working conditions in the food retail sector regarding remuneration, working hours, social benefits and, in specific, the permanent closure of commercial stores on Sundays. The final part of this research provides the main limitations of the study, as well as some suggestions for future research.
