- Biomedical Students’ Motivation with Project Based Learning: A Case StudyPublication . Reis, Sara Seabra dos; Coelho, Maria De Fátima; Coelho, LuisOne of the teacher’s first goals should be to motivate students to learn. Involving students in the learning process using project-based learning could be a useful and powerful tool to prepare the students for them professional future. As part of a degree course in Biomedical Engineering, from a Portuguese University, students were asked to look at society and identify a possible failure related to the biomedical field. From the identification of this fault, the project consisted in the planning and its possible resolution. In this article we present the case study of a student’s team, whose project was candidate and winner for a national prize in the field of health innovation. Despite the particularization of this case study, the students considered the experience innovative and simultaneously motivating. They also highlighted the added value of a project going beyond the classroom. Therefore, in addition to allowing them to obtain classification to the curricular unit, this type of teaching and learning could have a special impact on civil society.
- Comparison of antimony selenide thin films obtained by electrochemical deposition and selenization of a metal precursorPublication . Shongalova, Aigul; Aitzhanov, Madi; Zhantuarov, Sultan; Urazov, Kazhmukhan; Fernandes, Paulo; Tokmoldin, Nurlan; Correia, Maria RosárioIn this work, we present a study comparing two methods of Sb2Se3 deposition, namely electrochemical deposition and selenization of a thin-film metallic Sb – precursor deposited by magnetron sputtering. The Sb selenization process was carried out in the range of temperatures from 270 ºC to 350 ºC in an argon atmosphere enriched with elemental Se vapor. Electrochemical deposition of Sb2Se3 was performed in a three-electrode cell at constant potential. Following electrochemical deposition, the samples were annealed in argon at temperatures ranging from 270 ºC to 350 ºC. Characterization of the obtained thin films was performed using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and optical transmission. Both deposition methods demonstrate successful emergence of the selenide phase, albeit with the presence of varying levels of antimony oxide. The possibility of preferential growth was observed, which is suggested as dependent on growth method and annealing temperature.
- Didactical use of a remote: a qualitative reflection of a teacherPublication . Lima, Natércia; Viegas, Clara; Garcia-Peñalvo, FranciscoThis work describes the teacher reflection reflections about a didactical implementation usin g a remote laboratory and their impact on his practice. These reflections are analyzed from three different perspectives: how the literature review influenced the design of the didactical implementation (namely the first); how his reflection upon his practice influenced its modifications; how his research activ ity impacted and affected his teaching practices in the subsequent implementations and guided the modification modifications made . The remote lab was introduced in a Physics Course in an Engineering degree and was intended to be a learning space where students had the opportunity to practice before the lab class, supporting the development of experimental competences, fundamental in an engineer profile. After the first implementation in 2016/17 academic year it has undergone two subsequent editions with adjustments and modifications. Some features previously reported in literature such as: teacher’s experience with VISIR, the importance of an introductory activity and defining VISIR tasks objectives, were corroborated by the teacher during his practice and research. Others, such as the difficulty some students have in understanding the difference between simulation and remote labs appeared directly from his practice and were pursued in his research in order to deeply understand its implications.
- Engineering education addressing professional challengesPublication . The exponential growth in technology, even though very beneficial to all, tends to worsen their needs of expertise, having to endlessly update themselves. Engineering education has been addressing these issues, hoping to contribute to better teaching practices more aligned with engineering professional world. Students must develop the necessary competences from the beginning of their education and engage into actively learning the subjects. Three aspects of this problematic are presented in this special session: educational experiences, students’ learning and professional challenges
- Evaluation of OCA diffusivity in tissues through diffuse reflection spectroscopyPublication . Martins, Inês S.; Pinheiro, M. R.; Silva, H. F.; Tuchin, V. V.; Oliveira, Luís M.The evaluation of the diffusion properties of optical clearing agents in biological tissues, which are necessary to characterize the transparency mechanisms, has been traditionally made using ex vivo tissues. With the objective of performing such evaluation in vivo, this study was made to evaluate and compare those properties for propylene glycol in skeletal muscle, as obtained with the collimated transmittance and diffuse reflectance kinetics. The diffusion time and the diffusion coefficient of propylene glycol in the muscle that were calculated both from transmittance and reflectance kinetics presented a deviation of 0.8%, a result that opens the possibility to use such a method in vivo.
- HANDCARE: Post stroke upper limb rehabilitation devicePublication . In Portugal, the Portuguese Stroke Society (SPAVC) estimates that approximately three Portuguese individuals experience a stroke every hour, resulting in fatality for one and debilitating sequelae for another. The sequelae of stroke hinder patients from performing their normal daily activities, thereby affecting their quality of life. There are limited exercises that enable patients to autonomously improve their condition. Therefore, it is imperative to identify more effective treatments to enhance the quality of life for stroke patients. In this work, we describe the development of a rehabilitation device for the upper limb post-stroke. Conventional rehabilitation methods often possess disadvantages, primarily due to the use of repetitive exercises and bulky equipment requiring the assistance of a physiotherapist. However, the proposed device allows the patient to regain a certain level of autonomy in the affected limb through a game controlled by the upper limb. Additionally, the device records the patient's progress throughout the sessions, which can be monitored by a specialized healthcare professional. This rehabilitation device is expected to provide a more accessible and enjoyable approach to assist stroke patients in recovering their motor skills in the affected upper limb, thereby promoting a significant improvement in their quality of life.
- Influence of an innovative dental post approach in dentin mechanical behaviorPublication . A number of different materials and shapes of dental posts have been manufactured, which leads to different mechanical behaviors. The currently used post systems frequently result in failure or fracture of the tooth, due to the difference between tooth and dentin mechanical properties. Recently, a bundle of fine individual posts made of reinforced fiberglass has been developed. This new approach is not a single-post and it can be spread apart, being individually distributed in the tooth canal. With this configuration, the fine posts can adapt to suit into any root canal anatomy. Biomechanical properties similar to the dentin are being reported as an advantage for the use of this new dental post. The purpose of this study is to understand if the bundle post introduces an improvement in the results of endodontic treatment, compared with the currently used post systems. This study was carried out using the finite element method to determine the influence of stress distribution on dentin, when these two different approaches are used. The results show that stresses at the dentin changed with the dental post used. The use of bundle post appears to better accommodate the developed stress, reducing the stresses in the tooth.
- Measurement of optical properties of normal and pathological human liver tissue from deep-UV to NIRPublication . Carneiro, Isa; Carvalho, Sónia; Henrique, Rui; Oliveira, Luís; Tuchin, Valery V.The interest of using light in clinical practice is increasing strongly and many applications work at various wavelengths from the ultraviolet to the infrared. Due to this great range of applications, the determination of the optical properties of biological tissues in a wide spectral range becomes of interest. The liver is an important organ, since it has a major role in the human body and various pathologies are known to develop within it. For these reasons, this study concerns the estimation of the optical properties of human normal and pathological (metastatic carcinoma) liver tissues between 200 and 1000 nm. The obtained optical properties present the expected wavelength dependencies for both tissues – the refractive index, the absorption and the scattering coefficients decrease with the wavelength and the anisotropy and light penetration depth increase with the wavelength. Although similar behavior was observed for the various properties between the normal and pathological tissues, evidence of smaller blood content in the pathological tissues was found. A possible explanation is that the cancer cells destroy liver’s vasculature and internal architecture, providing though a reduction in the blood content. For low wavelengths, it was observed a matching between the scattering and the reduced scattering coefficients, which implies a nearly zero anisotropy in that range. The scattering coefficient decreases from nearly 140 cm-1 (at 200 nm) to 80 cm-1 (at 1000 nm) for the normal liver and from nearly 140 cm-1 (at 200 nm) to 95 cm-1 (at 1000 nm) for the pathological tissue.
- Mechanical behavior of external fixator on fracture healing processPublication . The currently used system scannot predict or measure the complete bone consolidation[1, 2]. The purpose of the present study is to understand the phases of healing and to predict functional bone consolidation.This study was carrying out using the finite element analysis (FEA)to determine the influence of stress distribution along the tibia and the rods of the fixator.This information gathered by the present study is relevant to help medical and scientific communities to know the real fracture healing process.
- Real-time Modeling of Abnormal Physiological Signals in a Phantom for Bioengineering EducationPublication . Vieira, Helder; Costa, Nelson; Coelho, Luis Filipe Pinto; Alves, JoaquimIn clinical practice and in particular in the diagnostic process, the assessment of cardiac and respiratory functions is supported by electrocardiogram and auscultation. These exams are non-invasive, quick and inexpensive to perform and easy to interpret. For these reasons, this type of assessment is a constant in the daily life of a clinician and the information obtained is central to the decision making process. Therefore, it is essential that during their training, students of health-related subjects acquire skills in the acquisition and evaluation of the referred physiological signals. Simulation, considering the technological possibilities of today, is an excellent preparation tool since it exposes trainees to near real contexts but without the associated risks. Hence, the simulation of physiological signals plays an important role in the education of healthcare professionals, bioengineering professionals and also in the development and calibration of medical devices. This paper describes a project to develop synchronized electrocardiogram (ECG), phonocardiogram (PCG) and breathing sounds simulators that aims to improve an existing phantom simulator. The developed system allows, in an integrated way, to generate normal and pathological signals, being contemplated several distinct pathologies. For engineering education, it is also possible to simulate the introduction of signal disturbances or hardware malfunctions. A graphical interface allows changing operating parameters in real time.
