- Developing the world in 2021 with clean and safe energyPublication . Caetano, Nídia; Vale, Zita; Felgueiras, Carlos; Salvini, Coriolano; Felgueiras, Carlos(Special Issue Information). Dear colleagues, The world’s huge population growth and fast development are putting sustainability issues on the agenda. The COVID-19 pandemic has clearly demonstrated how energy is being used, as well as how dependent on energy we are to work, travel, educate ourselves, or in our daily activities. The ever-growing energy consumption is still mostly relying on fossil fuels, with dramatic impacts on the environment, causing soil, air, and water contamination, that in turn negatively impact on population health and development. To mitigate this situation and try to alleviate the stress on development posed by the uneven distribution of fuel resources, it is mandatory that nations shift away from relying on fossil fuels toward more environmentally sustainable energy sources. The world can only continue to develop sustainably if the effects of fossil fuel extraction, transportation, and combustion are stopped, which can only occur if energy is used more efficiently and produced from renewable sources, produced locally, and made available where needed, using adequate energy distribution networks and storage energy systems. Moreover, empowering energy end users, namely in the scope of citizen energy communities and using effective demand response schemes, is also relevant to ensure sustainable development.
- Engineering Education: Challenges for InnovationPublication . Restivo, Teresa; Alves, Gustavo R.“Engineering Education: Challenges for Innovation” is the scope of the 1st International Conference of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (in Portuguese: Sociedade Portuguesa para a Educação em Engenharia, SPEE) [1]. SPEE is a young society now completing four years since its public presentation and launching by the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto, in February 19, 2010.
- Fighting climate change with circular economyPublication . Borrego, Carlos; Nunes, Maria Isabel; Felgueiras, Carlos; Caetano, Nídia; Dias, Marta Ferreira(Excerpt) Climate change has been internationally recognized as a global problem, caused by human action and intensified by national development. Global warming is its most known effect, affecting agricultural activity, increasing drought periods, and causing serious health conditions in worldwide population. Initiatives such as the IPCC have been established to prevent and mitigate climate change and global warming. The Paris Agreement signed by many nations in 2015 represents a significant recognition of the need for global policy actions, across all the activity sectors. Though progress is pursued by developed and developing countries, the scarcity of fossil energy sources and the need to develop in a sustainable way have led to new ideas about the use of natural resources, thus leading to what is nowadays called the circular economy. This Special Issue of Climate, with the theme ‘’Fighting Climate Change with Circular Economy’’, aims to publish research or review articles dealing with topics related to climate change and global warming, within the circular economy perspective, exploring the role and progress of energy policy in the mitigation and adaptation to climate change. - Hands-on and remote lab in an engineering statistics coursePublication . Zannin, Marcelo; Lima, Natércia; Pinto, Carla M.A.
- PrólogoPublication . Alves, Gustavo R.September 22, 2005. A lecture room at the University of Catania, Italy, is being used for hosting a technical session of the 10th IEEE International Conference on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation (ETFA’05). Inside the room, two researchers (Gustavo Alves and Javier García Zubía) who had never met before are expected to present their work about the same topic: remote laboratories. Gustavo’s presentation focuses on preliminary results of the RexNet project. His PowerPoint presentation contains seven slides for a 10 minutes’ presentation. Results from most recent conversations among the project participants are still fresh on his mind and missing from the prepared slides. Luckily, there is a whiteboard and some marker pens in the room.
- Sustainable energy and biorefineries from biowastesPublication . Caetano, Nídia; Balu, Alina M.; Costa, Mário; Gouveia, Luisa; Parthiba Karthikeyan, Obulisamy; Mata, TeresaWhile renewable energy is usually considered environmentally friendly, its sustainability must be demonstrated, especially when produced from biomass sources. Moreover, there is an ongoing effort towards the development of increasing circular economy models, instead of the conventional linear economy models. This movement has opened new opportunities for the sustainable production of energy from various sources, in particular from biowaste resulting from food production and consumption, a significant source of waste that needs to be properly treated instead of disposed of. This special issue of Sustainability, with the theme Sustainable Energy and Biorefineries from Biowastes, aims to publish research or review articles dealing with the energy valorization of biowaste from various sources, mainly for producing energy or energy carriers.
