- Who participates in aphasia research? An analysis of the REhabilitation and recovery of peopLE with Aphasia after StrokE (RELEASE) data setPublication . Patrício, BrigidaPeople with aphasia present with different of demographic, language, stroke, and impairment profiles. A Cochrane review found that two-thirds of included trials had comparison data on participants at baseline (Brady, Kelly, Godwin, Enderby, & Campbell, 2016). Participant selection may have a considerable impact on the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions (Hallowell, 2008) while participant description is vital to interpretate the clinical relevance to patient subgroup (external validity). Inadequate description of aphasia research participants has been highlighted (Brady et al., 2016; Brookshire, 1983; Roberts, Code, & McNeil, 2003) as have data collection recommendations and reporting in prospective aphasia research studies.
- Economia verde e economia circular: desafios e oportunidadesPublication . Ribeiro, Anabela Vaz; Fonseca, Luís; Santos, SofiaISEP, through CIDEM (Center for Research and Development in Mechanical Engineering), is a co-promoter of the “PME Sustentável” (Sustainable SME) project. This project, funded under the COMPETE 2020 / FEDER, aims to strengthen the competitiveness of Portuguese small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by promoting the adoption of a circular economy. The Sustainable SME project has emerged from the need to respond to the challenges arising from the EU Directive 2014/95 / EU, which consists of the disclosure by companies of information not included in the traditional financial report. It is intended that organizations also disclose data on sustainability (social and environmental factors). The results of the study are compiled in this book.
- Energy Resource Management Model in a Hotel Building Using a Web PlatformPublication . Sousa, Tiago; Faria, Pedro; Vale, Zita; Landeck, Jorge; Matos, Luisa; Ferreira, RodrigoDistributed generation and demand response have been fostered in the last years, sometimes less than desired. In fact, these energy resources, which have a distributed nature have been mostly applied and discussed in the wide view of the operation and planning of the distribution system. However, a great potential is now being explored in the scope of buildings energy management. In the present paper, an energy resource management model has been implemented in order to be integrated with a web platform that supports the customer information concerning energy usage. The model can be used for several kinds of buildings. A hotel building is focused in this paper, namely in the case study that discusses the use of each resource, including photovoltaic generation and demand response.
- The trigger system of a large area RPC TOF-tracker muon telescopePublication . Clemêncio, Filomena; Blanco, A.; Carolino, N.; Loureiro, C.The TOF-tracker concept, the simultaneous measurement of accurate time and bi dimensional space coordinates in a single gaseous detector, has been previously demonstrated based on Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) technology. Recently, a larger area, 1550 × 1250 mm2 , RPC detector has been built. Signals are induced on metallic strips located in each side of the RPC active volume and coupled to both charge-sensitive and timing circuits, that can be used to generate a coincidence trigger. In this work, the architecture and performance of the trigger system of the detector is reported. The system is based on off-the-shelf inexpensive modules and in a custom program written in VHDL running in a Xilinx Spartan-6 FPGA. It is fast, fully parameterized and supports several trigger strategies, allowing at the same time the collection of data referring to the operating condition of the detector, relevant for tests and detector maintenance.
- Fasciola hepatica extract induces cell death of mammalian cellsPublication . Ferreira, Stephanie; Fernandes, Rúben; Botelho, Mónica C.Fascioliasis is a neglected tropical disease that affects poor people from poor and developing countries. In the world, it has been estimated that at least 2.6 million people are affected with this disease. The International agency for Research on Cancer, states that O. viverrini and C. sinensis, also liver flukes, are considered as definitive causes of cholangiocarcinoma. However, fascioliasis caused by F. hepatica has not been associated with cancer to date. There are not any known causative associations between this parasite and liver cancer (cholangiocarcinoma).
- Patients' perspectives about the design of a mobile application for psychotic disordersPublication . Simões de Almeida, Raquel; Sousa, Tiago; da Silva Marques, António; Queirós, CristinaBased on the design of applications for psychotic disorders illness self-management, this study aimed to understand patients’ patterns of technology usage, as well as their expectations and requirements concerning the design of an app for rehabilitation and illness management purposes. It also aimed to identify guidelines for mobile application development for this population.
- Tissue optical clearing as a diagnostic tool for tissue pathology differentiationPublication . Oliveira, Luís; Carneiro, Isa; Carvalho, Sónia; Henrique, Rui; Tuchina, Daria; Timoshina, Polina; Bashkatov, Alexey; Genina, Elina; Tuchin, ValeryWith the objective of developing a diagnostic tool, we have used the immersion optical clearing method and studied normal and pathological tissues (cancer, diabetes) under treatment by optical clearing agents (OCAs). In order to quantify pathology status OCA diffusion properties in different tissues were measured. We have demonstrated that free water content in cancerous tissues is higher than in normal.
