- Battery management system for electric racing carsPublication . Araújo, Joaquim Alexandre da Silva; Harter, MatthiasWith the introduction of the electrics cars into the market new technologies regarding the battery are being developed and new problems to be solved, one of them the battery management system because each type of cell requires a specific way of handling. This research is done using the active research method to find out the actual problem on this subject and features a BMS should have, understand how they work and how to develop them applied to the purpose on this work. Once the features the BMS should have are clarified, it’s possible to develop a BMS for an electric racing car. The decisions are made taking into consideration the nature of the vehicle being developed. After the project done it’s clear to see that what was developed was not only the BMS itself but all the other factors around it, such as CAN communication, safety control, diagnostics and so on.
- A Multiple Criteria Utility-based Approa h for the Unit Commitment with Wind Power and Pumped Storage HydroPublication . Vieira, Bruno Miguel Soares; Viana, Ana Maria Marques Moura Gomes; Pedroso, João Pedro; Matos, Manuel; Kopfer, Herbert; Shönberger, JörnThe integration of wind power in eletricity generation brings new challenges to unit commitment due to the random nature of wind speed. For this particular optimisation problem, wind uncertainty has been handled in practice by means of conservative stochastic scenario-based optimisation models, or through additional operating reserve settings. However, generation companies may have different attitudes towards operating costs, load curtailment, or waste of wind energy, when considering the risk caused by wind power variability. Therefore, alternative and possibly more adequate approaches should be explored. This work is divided in two main parts. Firstly we survey the main formulations presented in the literature for the integration of wind power in the unit commitment problem (UCP) and present an alternative model for the wind-thermal unit commitment. We make use of the utility theory concepts to develop a multi-criteria stochastic model. The objectives considered are the minimisation of costs, load curtailment and waste of wind energy. Those are represented by individual utility functions and aggregated in a single additive utility function. This last function is adequately linearised leading to a mixed-integer linear program (MILP) model that can be tackled by general-purpose solvers in order to find the most preferred solution. In the second part we discuss the integration of pumped-storage hydro (PSH) units in the UCP with large wind penetration. Those units can provide extra flexibility by using wind energy to pump and store water in the form of potential energy that can be generated after during peak load periods. PSH units are added to the first model, yielding a MILP model with wind-hydro-thermal coordination. Results showed that the proposed methodology is able to reflect the risk profiles of decision makers for both models. By including PSH units, the results are significantly improved.
- Stress Ratio Effects on the fatigue Properties of Biaxially Loaded Tubular FRP-Specimens – Experimental StudyPublication . Marques, Jorge Filipe Simões; Greif, RobertIn this work tubular fiber reinforced specimens are tested for fatigue life. The specimens are biaxially loaded with tension and shear stresses, with a load angle β of 30° and 60° and a load ratio of R=0,1. There are many factors that affect fatigue life of a fiber reinforced material and the main goal of this work is to study the effects of load ratio R by obtaining S-N curves and compare them to the previous works (1). All the other parameters, such as specimen production, fatigue loading frequency and temperature, will be the same as for the previous tests. For every specimen, stiffness, temperature of the specimen during testing, crack counting and final fracture mode are obtained. Prior to testing, a study if the literature regarding the load ratio effects on composites fatigue life and with that review estimate the initial stresses to be applied in testing. In previous works (1) similar specimens have only been tested for a load ratio of R=-1 and therefore the behaviour of this tubular specimens for a different load ratio is unknown. All the data acquired will be analysed and compared to the previous works, emphasizing the differences found and discussing the possible explanations for those differences. The crack counting software, developed at the institute, has shown useful before, however different adjustments to the software parameters lead to different cracks numbers for the same picture, and therefore a better methodology will be discussed to improve the crack counting results. After the specimen’s failure, all the data will be collected and stored and fibre volume content for every specimen is also determinate. The number of tests required to make the S-N curves are obtained according to the existent standards. Additionally are also identified some improvements to the testing machine setup and to the procedures for future testing.
- Characterisation of noisy speech channels in 2G and 3G mobile networksPublication . Leite, Bruno Daniel Moreira; Maros, Dóra; Mamede, Jorge Botelho da CostaAs the wireless cellular market reaches competitive levels never seen before, network operators need to focus on maintaining Quality of Service (QoS) a main priority if they wish to attract new subscribers while keeping existing customers satisfied. Speech Quality as perceived by the end user is one major example of a characteristic in constant need of maintenance and improvement. It is in this topic that this Master Thesis project fits in. Making use of an intrusive method of speech quality evaluation, as a means to further study and characterize the performance of speech codecs in second-generation (2G) and third-generation (3G) technologies. Trying to find further correlation between codecs with similar bit rates, along with the exploration of certain transmission parameters which may aid in the assessment of speech quality. Due to some limitations concerning the audio analyzer equipment that was to be employed, a different system for recording the test samples was sought out. Although the new designed system is not standard, after extensive testing and optimization of the system's parameters, final results were found reliable and satisfactory. Tests include a set of high and low bit rate codecs for both 2G and 3G, where values were compared and analysed, leading to the outcome that 3G speech codecs perform better, under the approximately same conditions, when compared with 2G. Reinforcing the idea that 3G is, with no doubt, the best choice if the costumer looks for the best possible listening speech quality. Regarding the transmission parameters chosen for the experiment, the Receiver Quality (RxQual) and Received Energy per Chip to the Power Density Ratio (Ec/N0), these were subject to speech quality correlation tests. Final results of RxQual were compared to those of prior studies from different researchers and, are considered to be of important relevance. Leading to the confirmation of RxQual as a reliable indicator of speech quality. As for Ec/N0, it is not possible to state it as a speech quality indicator however, it shows clear thresholds for which the MOS values decrease significantly. The studied transmission parameters show that they can be used not only for network management purposes but, at the same time, give an expected idea to the communications engineer (or technician) of the end-to-end speech quality consequences. With the conclusion of the work new ideas for future studies come to mind. Considering that the fourth-generation (4G) cellular technologies are now beginning to take an important place in the global market, as the first all-IP network structure, it seems of great relevance that 4G speech quality should be subject of evaluation. Comparing it to 3G, not only in narrowband but also adding wideband scenarios with the most recent standard objective method of speech quality assessment, POLQA. Also, new data found on Ec/N0 tests, justifies further research studies with the intention of validating the assumptions made in this work.
- Estudio de la gestión de la variable ambiental en la generación termoeléctricaPublication . Blanco, Jorge González; Nogueira, Teresa Alexandra Ferreira Mourão PintoEn la actualidad, el cambio climático es uno de los temas de mayor preocupación para la población mundial y los científicos de todo el mundo. Debido al crecimiento de la población de forma exponencial, la demanda de energía aumenta acorde con ello, por lo que las actividades de producción energética aumentan consecuentemente, siendo éstas las principales causantes de la aceleración del cambio climático. Pese a que muchos países previamente habían apostado por la producción energética mediante tecnologías limpias a partir de energías renovables, hoy en día es imposible prescindir de los combustibles fósiles pues, junto a la energía nuclear, suponen el mayor porcentaje dentro del mix energético de los países más grandes del mundo, por lo que el cambio debe ser global y con todos los países implicados al unísono. Por ello, los países desarrollados decidieron acordar una serie de leyes y normas para la regulación y el control de la expansión energética en el mundo, mediante programas de incentivo a las empresas para la producción de energía limpia, libre de emisiones, sustituyendo y mejorando los procesos tecnológicos para que garanticen un desarrollo sostenible. De esta forma, se conseguiría también reducir la dependencia energética de los países productores de los recursos fósiles más importantes y a su vez, ayudar a otros sectores a diversificar su negocio y mejorar así la economía de las áreas colindantes a las centrales de producción térmica. Gracias a estos programas de incentivo o, también llamados mecanismos de flexibilidad, las empresas productoras de energía, al acometer inversiones en tecnologia limpia, dejan de emitir gases de efecto invernadero a la atmósfera. Por tanto, gracias al comercio de emisiones y al mercado voluntario, las empresas pueden vender dichas emisiones aumentando la rentabilidad de sus proyectos, haciendo más atractivo de por sí el hecho de invertir en tecnología limpia. En el proyecto desarrollado, se podrá comprobar de una forma más extensa todo lo anteriormente citado. Para ello, se desarrollará una herramienta de cálculo que nos permitirá analizar los beneficios obtenidos por la sustitución de un combustible fósil, no renovable, por otro renovable y sostenible, como es la biomasa. En esta herramienta se calcularán, de forma estimada, las reducciones de las emisiones de CO2 que supone dicha sustitución y se hallará, en función del valor de las cotizaciones de los bonos de carbono en los diferentes mercados, cuál será el beneficio económico obtenido por la venta de las emisiones no emitidas que supone esta sustitución. Por último, dicho beneficio será insertado en un balance económico de la central donde se tendrán en cuenta otras variables como el precio del combustible o las fluctuaciones del precio de la electricidad, para hallar finalmente la rentabilidad que supondría la inversión de esta adaptación en la central. Con el fin de complementar y aplicar la herramienta de cálculo, se analizarán dos casos prácticos de una central de carbón, en los cuales se decide su suscripción dentro del contexto de los mecanismos de flexibilidad creados en los acuerdos internacionales.
- Life Cycle Assessment of the Hybrid Vehicle – Toyota PriusPublication . Henriques, Tiago Mendes; Herrmann, ChristophDie Luftverschmutzung, die globale Erwärmung sowie die Verknappung der endlichen Ressourcen sind die größten Bedenken der vergangenen Jahrzehnte. Die Nachfrage nach jeglicher Mobilität steigt rapide. Dementsprechend bemüht ist die Automobilindustrie Lösungen für Mobilität unter dem Aspekt der Nachhaltigkeit und dem Umweltschutz anzubieten. Die Elektrifizierung hat sich hierbei als der beste Weg herausgestellt, um die Umweltprobleme sowie die Abhängigkeit von fossilen Brennstoffen zu lösen. Diese Arbeit soll einen Einblick über die Umweltauswirkungen des Hybridfahrzeuges Toyota Prius geben. Hierbei findet eine Gliederung in vier verschiedene Lebensphasen statt. Im Anschluss bietet die Sachbilanz die Möglichkeit die Umweltauswirkungen mit verschiedenen Antriebsmöglichkeiten und Brennstoffen zu vergleichen. Das Modell hat gezeigt, dass der Toyota Prius während der Nutzung einen hohen Einfluss auf das Treibhauspotenzial aufweist. Durch die Nutzung anderer Brennstoffe, wie beispielsweise Ethanol oder Methanol lassen sich die Auswirkungen am Treibhauspotenzial sowie der Verbrauch an abiotischen Ressourcen reduzieren. Vergleicht man die Elektromobilität mit der konventionellen, so ist festzustellen, dass diese Art der Mobilität die derzeit beste Möglichkeit zur Reduzierung der Umweltbelastungen bietet. Die Auswirkungen der Elektromobilität sind im hohen Maße abhängig von der Art des verwendeten Strommixes.
- Full analysis of suspension geometry and chassis performance of Formula Student racing carPublication . Kowalik, Milosz; Ferreira, Fernando JoséFormula Student events gather engineering students, who compete, designing, building and racing single-seater cars. The team of ISEP is working on its first car that soon will take part in this competition. This work aims to analyze the current design’s chassis, focusing on suspension geometry and frame’s performance. After analyzing results of the tests planned suggestions, that can be taken into consideration during design process of next cars will be presented. As the car has not been tested yet this work can also be helpful to explain its performance on the track later.
- Industrie 4.0 Framework, Challenges and PerspectivesPublication . The rapid technological development of communication and information technologies allows the transmission of knowledge in real-time. In this context, it is imperative that the most developed countries are able to develop their own strategies to stimulate the industrial sector to keep up-to-date and being competitive in a dynamic and volatile global market so as to maintain its competitive capacities and by consequence, permits the maintenance of a pacific social state to meet the human and social needs of the nation. The path traced of competitiveness through technological differentiation in industrialization allows a wider and innovative field of research. Already we are facing a new phase of organization and industrial technology that begins to change the way we relate with the industry, society and the human interaction in the world of work in current standards. This Thesis, develop an analysis of Industrie 4.0 Framework, Challenges and Perspectives. Also, an analysis of German reality in facing to approach the future challenge in this theme, the competition expected to win in future global markets, points of domestic concerns felt in its industrial fabric household face this challenge and proposes recommendations for a more effective implementation of its own strategy. The methods of research consisted of a comprehensive review and strategically analysis of existing global literature on the topic, either directly or indirectly, in parallel with the analysis of questionnaires and data analysis performed by entities representing the industry at national and world global placement. The results found by this multilevel analysis, allowed concluding that this is a theme that is only in the beginning for construction the platform to engage the future Internet of Things in the industrial environment Industrie 4.0. This dissertation allows stimulate the need of achievements of more strategically and operational approach within the society itself as a whole to clarify the existing weaknesses in this area, so that the National Strategy can be implemented with effective approaches and planned actions for a direct training plan in a more efficiently path in education for the theme.
- Determination of permethrin and its metabolites in hearts and urines of rats by GC-ECD and GC-MSPublication . Mercuri, Ilaria; Gabbianelli, Rosita; Domingues, Valentina Maria Fernandes; Correia-Sá, LuísaPyrethroids are pesticides very used in agriculture, which tend to replace organophosfate and carbamate insecticides. These pesticides have shown to exhibit cardiotoxicity. The aim of this study was to assess if cardiotoxicity is due to direct or indirect effects (metabolites) of permethrin on hearts. There were studies 8 rats; three of them were sacrificed after 24 of the end of treatment with permethrin and the other four were sacrificed after 14 days of the end of treatment. Afterwards hearts and urines were collected. The amounts of permethrin and its main metabolite (3-PBA) were evaluated on hearts and urines of female rats which were treated with permethrin and sacrificed the day after and 14 days after the treatment. Moreover has been highlighted the difference of amount of permethrin and its metabolite between rats sacrificed immediately at the end of treatment and those sacrificed after 14 days. The study of permethrin was accomplished by liquid-liquid extraction and GC-ECD. The evaluation of 3-PBA was performed by SPE procedure with 2-PBA as internal standard and gas-chromatography GC-MS. The concentration of permethrin in hearts is basically the same in 24h and 14 days. The 3-PBA concentration in urines decreased 50 times from 24h to 14 days. In hearts the 3-PBA level also decrease but only 2.24 times and a high variation of results were achieved in rats after 14 days.
- Environmental/Regatta Buoy: Sensing SystemPublication . Van Flieberge, Mathias; Malheiro, Maria Benedita Campos Neves; Silva, Manuel; Ferreira, Paulo Alexandre Duarte; Guedes, PedroUm dos principais objetivos da ciência é perceber a natureza, i.e., descobrir e explicar o funcionamento do mundo que nos rodeia. Para tal, os cientistas precisam de coligir dados e monitorar o meio ambiente. Em particular, considerando que cerca de 70% da Terra é coberta por água, a coleta de parâmetros de caracterização da água de grandes superfícies é uma prioridade. A monitorização das condições da água é feita principalmente através de bóias. No entanto, as bóias disponíveis no mercado não satisfazem as necessidades existentes. Esta é uma das principais razões que levaram o Laboratório de Sistemas Autónomos (LSA) do Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto a lançarem um projeto para o desenvolvimento de uma bóia reconfigurável e com dois modos de funcionamento: monitorização ambiental e baliza ativa de regata. O segundo modo é destinado a regatas de veleiros autónomos. O projeto começou há um ano com um projeto do European Project Project [1] (EPS), realizado por quatro estudantes internacionais, destinado à construção da estrutura da bóia e à selecção dos componentes mais adequados para o sistema de medição e controlo. A arquitetura que foi definida para este sistema é do tipo mestre-escravo e é composta por uma unidade de controlo mestre para a telemetria e configuração e uma unidade de controlo escrava para a medição e armazenamento de dados. O desenvolvimento do projeto continuou com dois estudantes belgas que trabalharam na comunicação e no armazenamento de dados. Este projeto, que prossegue com o desenvolvimento da medição e do armazenamento de dados do lado da unidade de controlo escrava, tem os seguintes objetivos: (i ) implementar o protocolo de comunicação na unidade de controlo escrava; (ii ) coligir e armazenar os dados dos sensores no cartão SD em tempo real; (iii ) fornecer dados em tempo útil; e (iv) recuperar dados do cartão SD em tempo diferido. As contribuições anteriores foram estudadas e foi feito um levantamento dos projetos congéneres existentes. O desenvolvimento do projeto atual começou com o protocolo de comunicação. Este protocolo, que foi projetado pelos alunos anteriores, foi um bom ponto de partida. No entanto, o protocolo foi atualizado e melhorado com novas funcionalidades. Esta última componente foi um trabalho conjunto com Laurens Allart, que esteve a trabalhar no subsistema de telemetria e de configuração durante este semestre. O protocolo foi implementado do lado da unidade de controlo escrava através de uma estrutura de múltiplas actividades paralelas (multithreaded). Esta estrutura recebe as mensagens da unidade mestre, executa as ações solicitadas e envia de volta o resultado. A bóia é um dispositivo reconfigurável multimodo que pode ser expandido com novos modos de operação no futuro. Infelizmente, sofre de algumas limitações: suporta uma carga máxima de 40 kg e tem uma área de implantação limitada pela distância máxima à estacão base.
