- Mobile laboratories as an alternative to conventional remote laboratoriesPublication . Saliah-Hassane, Hamadou; Simão, José P.; Lima, João P.; Alves, Gustavo R.; Silva, Juarez; Alves, João B.Remote laboratories have been playing an important role on the improvement of flexibility and the extent of practical activities in teaching and learning activities in engineering and technology. However, the current remote laboratories model does not consider dynamic scenarios including collaboration, peer-to-peer labs and mobile labs. This paper presents a set of tools for creating collaborative online mobile laboratories that allow students to develop their own labs and share them with classmates and teachers. The approach used is compatible with the machine and network configurations that the target user has in schools and at home, and provides the retrieval of information for learning evaluation.
- A remote engineering solution for automating a roller hearth kilnPublication . Silva, Juarez; Fischer, Benedito R.; Alves, Gustavo R.; Alves, João B.We present the architecture for a remote application, accessible through the Internet, able to monitor and control a roller hearth kiln, used in a ceramics industry for firing materials. The proposed architecture is based on a Micro Web Server (MWS), whose main function is to monitor and control the firing process, by reading the data from a series of temperature sensors and by controlling a series of electronic valves and servo motors. This solution is also intended to be a low-cost alternative to other potential solutions. For better understanding the system to be automated and its operation we decided to develop a scale model (100:1) and experiment on it the devised solution, based on a MWS.

- The VISIR+ Project – Helping Contextualize Math in an Engineering CoursePublication . Lima, Natércia; Zannin, Marcelo; Viegas, Clara; Marques, Arcelina; Alves, Gustavo R.; Felgueiras, Carlos; Costa, Ricardo; Fidalgo, André; Silva, Juarez; Pozzo, María I.; Dobboletta, Elsa; Penãlvo, Francisco J.; Gustavsson, IngvarThe long-term goal of engineering education is to prepare students to work as engineers. Being a practical profession, laboratories play a crucial role in illustrating concepts and principles as well as improving technical skills. In the last decades the use of online resources (simulators and remote labs) has been growing, either as a complementary and/or as an alternative way of developing experimental competences. In the scope of the VISIR+ Project, this work presents the first results of a didactical implementation using simultaneously the remote laboratory VISIR (Virtual Instrument Systems in Reality), simulation and calculus in a Math Course at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). The preliminary results indicate that the use of several resources increases students’ performance, boosting their learning and competence development.
