- QoL perception: Comparison between tinnitus patients and their relatives (Preliminary results)Publication . Oliveira, Vasco; Meneses, R.F.Tinnitus is a very common problem and very distressing to some patients. In fact, research shows that the Quality of Life (QoL) of tinnitus patients is worse than that of the general population.
- A remote engineering solution for automating a roller hearth kilnPublication . Silva, Juarez; Fischer, Benedito R.; Alves, Gustavo R.; Alves, João B.We present the architecture for a remote application, accessible through the Internet, able to monitor and control a roller hearth kiln, used in a ceramics industry for firing materials. The proposed architecture is based on a Micro Web Server (MWS), whose main function is to monitor and control the firing process, by reading the data from a series of temperature sensors and by controlling a series of electronic valves and servo motors. This solution is also intended to be a low-cost alternative to other potential solutions. For better understanding the system to be automated and its operation we decided to develop a scale model (100:1) and experiment on it the devised solution, based on a MWS.
- A smart layer for remote laboratoriesPublication . Costa, Ricardo J.; Alves, Gustavo R.; Santos, DomingosSince the mid 90’s, there is a growing number of remote labs available through the Internet. Several solutions for harmonizing the software and hardware used for implementing this resource have already been proposed and described in literature. However, the present and perceived situation is the lack of such a thing like a standard approach to implement a remote lab, both in terms of hardware and software. This is also true when considering two common aspects to all remote labs: the physical space occupied by each and the power supply to the hardware used in it. In this paper we try to address these two common aspects by proposing the use of a standard domotic system, usually used in smart homes, able to control both the physical environment associated to the remote lab and the power supply to the devices and apparatus used on the experiments hosted at such remote lab.
- Towards a Sensor Classification Scheme for Robotic ManipulatorsPublication . Lima, Miguel F. M.; Tenreiro Machado, J. A.; Crisóstomo, ManuelThis paper analyzes the signals captured during impacts and vibrations of a mechanical manipulator. To test the impacts, a flexible beam is clamped to the end-effector of a manipulator that is programmed in a way such that the rod moves against a rigid surface. Several signals are captured and theirs Fourier Transforms are calculated and approximated by trendlines based on a power law formula. A sensor classification scheme based on the frequency spectrum behavior is presented.
- Phonophoresis with diclofenac gel in the ankle sprainsPublication . Mendonça, C.; Torres, RuiThe ankle sprains represents one of the most frequent muscular-skeletal injuries in the physical therapy practice, specially at the acute stage, after the injury. The most common therapeutic modalities used to eliminate the pain and the inflammatory process in the acute stage are the administration of non-steroid Antiinflammatory drugs and the Ultrasound therapy. Even though the use of these type of drugs often brings some side effects related to it’s oral administration. The Transdermic administration of this drug in gel form brings some actual controversy about it’s deep penetration and therapeutic index.
