- Application of prospective scenarios in a tourism companyPublication . Ferreira, Fernanda A.; Gomes, Carlos F. Simões; Santos, Marcos dos; Souza, Pedro Soares; Hübner, HudsonThe coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic spread rapidly around the world, generating economic shocks with pace and intensity above those observed in previous crises. Faced with this pandemic scenario, several economic sectors such as tourism, health, transportation were seriously affected. This paper focuses on the tourism sector which has been affected by various restrictions on passenger transport, the end of the free movement of people between countries, and the insecurity of travelers. This paper uses the Method Unified for Strategic Prospective Planning (Momento) for a company in the tourism sector so that it is possible to deal more effectively with uncertainties about the coming years. The methodology applied here can be a strategic-prospective planning proposal for this sector. The study based on the collected data allowed the creation of three possible future scenarios, which could support the creation of action plans and help the company's decision-makers to avoid themselves in the worst-case scenario and maximize the use of the best-case scenario. From this study, it was possible to bring greater knowledge to the tourism company about which are the variables that can most impact its business in a 5-year horizon, because the approach by the Momento method allowed the structuring and analysis of the variables and uncertainties observed in the construction of the prospective scenarios of tourism and its business in the middle of the socioeconomic instability experienced in the current period of the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Driving tourism development: multicriteria decision-making in Rio de Janeiro’s tourism sectorPublication . Tourism is no exception, as it continues to be used as a source of resource acquisition and socioeconomic development. The purpose of this study is to promote the development of the tourism sector in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro by applying the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and AHP-Gaussian (AHP-G) multicriteria analysis methods to support potential public and/or private investments in tourism. The findings of this study will help a travel agency make a strategic decision about where to open a new branch, taking into account the sector’s potential in Rio de Janeiro. The study found that São Conrado and Ipanema are ideal neighbourhoods for establishing a new travel agency branch. Furthermore, the methodology used in this study can be used as a guideline for other organizations in the field looking to undertake similar evaluations, providing a structured approach to decision-making and investment evaluation.
- Supporting digital nomads’ city choice using AHP-Gaussian and MABACPublication . Silva, Renato; Gomes, Carlos; Santos, Marcos dos; Ferreira, Flávio; Ferreira, Fernanda A.The phenomenon of digital nomadism has been gaining prominence worldwide, driven by advances in communication technologies and the growth of remote work. Choosing an ideal city to live in is a complex decision, involving multiple quantitative and qualitative factors. This study applies a hybrid multicriteria decision-making approach, combining the Analytic Hierarchy Process—Gaussian (AHP-Gaussian) for determining criteria weights and the Multi-Attributive Border Approximation Area Comparison (MABAC) method for ranking alternatives. Data were obtained from the Kaggle platform, covering 15 cost-of-living criteria for 50 cities worldwide. The AHP-Gaussian method reduces subjectivity in weight assignment, while MABAC ensures stable and reliable rankings even with variations in the dataset. The combined application of these methods allows digital nomads to make better-informed choices aligned with their personal and professional priorities. The results point to Seattle (USA) as the most suitable city among those evaluated, followed by Atlanta and Washington, both also in the USA. The study demonstrates that the hybrid approach is an effective and replicable decision support tool in contexts with similar decision-making needs.
- A Systematic Approach to the Management of Military Human Resources through the ELECTRE-MOr Multicriteria MethodPublication . These issues almost universally involve multiple conflicting objectives, uncertainties, costs, and benefits in decision-making. In this context, personnel assessment problems, which include several candidates as alternatives, along with several complex evaluation criteria, can be solved by applying Multicriteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods. Uncertainty and subjectivity characterize the choice of personnel for missions or promotions at the military level. In this paper, we evaluated 30 Brazilian Navy officers in the light of four criteria and 34 subcriteria. To support the decision-making process regarding the promotion of officers, we applied the ELECTRE-Mor MCDM method. We categorized the alternatives into three classes in the modeling proposed in this work, namely: Class A (Promotion by deserving), Class B (Promotion by seniority), and Class C (Military not promoted). As a result, the method presented 20% of the officers evaluated with performance corresponding to class A, 53% of the alternatives to class B, and 26.7% with performances attributed to class C. In addition, we presented a sensitivity analysis procedure through variation of the cut-off level λ, allowing decision-making on more flexible or rigorous scenarios at the discretion of the Naval High Administration. This work brings a valuable contribution to academia and society since it represents the application of an MCDM method in state of the art to contribute to solving a real problem.
