- An architecture for an effective usage of data mining in business intelligence systemsPublication . Azevedo, Ana; Santos, Manuel FilipeBusiness Intelligence (BI) is one emergent area of the Decision Support Systems (DSS) discipline. Over the last years, the evolution in this area has been considerable. Similarly, in the last years, there has been a huge growth and consolidation of the Data Mining (DM) field. DM is being used with success in BI systems, but a truly DM integration with BI is lacking. Therefore, a lack of an effective usage of DM in BI can be found in some BI systems. An architecture that pretends to conduct to an effective usage of DM in BI is presented.
- A benchmarking analysis of open-source business intelligence tools in healthcare environmentsPublication . Brandão, Andreia; Pereira, Eliana; Esteves, Marisa; Portela, Carlos Filipe; Santos, Manuel Filipe; Abelha, António; Machado, JoséIn recent years, a wide range of Business Intelligence (BI) technologies have been applied to different areas in order to support the decision-making process. BI enables the extraction of knowledge from the data stored. The healthcare industry is no exception, and so BI applications have been under investigation across multiple units of different institutions. Thus, in this article, we intend to analyze some open-source/free BI tools on the market and their applicability in the clinical sphere, taking into consideration the general characteristics of the clinical environment. For this purpose, six BI tools were selected, analyzed, and tested in a practical environment. Then, a comparison metric and a ranking were defined for the tested applications in order to choose the one that best applies to the extraction of useful knowledge and clinical data in a healthcare environment. Finally, a pervasive BI platform was developed using a real case in order to prove the tool viability.
- Business intelligence - state of the art, trends, and open issuesPublication . Azevedo, Ana; Santos, Manuel FilipeBusiness Intelligence (BI) is one emergent area of the Decision Support Systems (DSS) discipline. Over the last years, the evolution in this area has been considerable. An overview of some aspects of the area is presented in this article. The roots of BI and its usual associations with Knowledge Management Systems (KMS), Competitive Intelligence (CI), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are introduced. From the literature review, it was observed that the definition of an underlying structure on the area is missing. Therefore, a framework for BI is defined. The state of the art of BI research field was made, presenting recent trends and open issues for research.
- KDD, SEMMA and CRISP-DM: a parallel overviewPublication . Azevedo, Ana; Santos, Manuel Filipe; Instituto Politécnico do Porto. Instituto Superior de Contabilidade e Administração do PortoIn the last years there has been a huge growth and consolidation of the Data Mining field. Some efforts are being done that seek the establishment of standards in the area. Included on these efforts there can be enumerated SEMMA and CRISP-DM. Both grow as industrial standards and define a set of sequential steps that pretends to guide the implementation of data mining applications. The question of the existence of substantial differences between them and the traditional KDD process arose. In this paper, is pretended to establish a parallel between these and the KDD process as well as an understanding of the similarities between them.
