- Development and assessment of an E-Learning course on breast imaging for radiographers: a stratified randomized controlled trialPublication . Moreira, Inês C.; Ventura, Sandra; Ramos, Isabel; Rodrigues, Pedro PereiraMammography is considered the best imaging technique for breast cancer screening, and the radiographer plays an important role in its performance. Therefore, continuing education is critical to improving the performance of these professionals and thus providing better health care services. Our goal was to develop an e-learning course on breast imaging for radiographers, assessing its efficacy , effectiveness, and user satisfaction. A stratified randomized controlled trial was performed with radiographers and radiology students who already had mammography training, using pre- and post-knowledge tests, and satisfaction questionnaires. The primary outcome was the improvement in test results (percentage of correct answers), using intention-to-treat and per-protocol analysis. A total of 54 participants were assigned to the intervention (20 students plus 34 radiographers) with 53 controls (19+34). The intervention was completed by 40 participants (11+29), with 4 (2+2) discontinued interventions, and 10 (7+3) lost to follow-up. Differences in the primary outcome were found between intervention and control: 21 versus 4 percentage points (pp), P<.001. Stratified analysis showed effect in radiographers (23 pp vs 4 pp; P=.004) but was unclear in students (18 pp vs 5 pp; P=.098). Nonetheless, differences in students’ posttest results were found (88% vs 63%; P=.003), which were absent in pretest (63% vs 63%; P=.106). The per-protocol analysis showed a higher effect (26 pp vs 2 pp; P<.001), both in students (25 pp vs 3 pp; P=.004) and radiographers (27 pp vs 2 pp; P<.001). Overall, 85% were satisfied with the course, and 88% considered it successful. This e-learning course is effective, especially for radiographers, which highlights the need for continuing education.
- Interventions based on biofeedback systems to improve workers’ psychological well-being, mental health and safety: a systematic literature reviewPublication . Over the past few years, various mental health management solutions, such as biofeedback applications, have surfaced as promising avenues to improve employees' mental well-being. To gain deeper insights into the suitability and effectiveness of employing biofeedback-based mental health interventions in real-world workplace settings, given that most research has predominantly been conducted within controlled laboratory conditions. A systematic review was conducted to identify studies that used biofeedback interventions in workplace settings. The review focused on traditional biofeedback, mindfulness, app-directed interventions, immersive scenarios, and in-depth physiological data presentation. The review identified nine studies employing biofeedback interventions in the workplace. Breathing techniques showed great promise in decreasing stress and physiological parameters, especially when coupled with visual and/or auditory cues. Future research should focus on developing and implementing interventions to improve well-being and mental health in the workplace, with the goal of creating safer and healthier work environments and contributing to the sustainability of organizations.
- Need and outcomes of a 3D breast image to aid conservative cancer surgery planning: results of a multidisciplinary focus groupPublication . The purpose of this study is to identify needs and outcomes that can be explored in order to develop and assess a new 3D breast image to aid preoperative localization of nonpalpable breast lesions and surgical planning.

The research underscores the criticality of addressing technological, ethical, and practical hurdles in deploying these systems outside controlled laboratory environments. Methodologically, the study spanned three months and employed advanced facial recognition technology embedded in participants’ computing devices to collect physiological metrics such as heart rate, blinking frequency, and emotional states, thereby contributing to a stress detection dataset. This approach ensured data privacy and aligns with ethical standards. The results reveal significant challenges in data collection and processing, including biases in video datasets, the need for high-resolution videos, and the complexities of maintaining data quality and consistency, with 42% (after adjustments) of data lost. In conclusion, this research emphasizes the necessity for rigorous, ethical, and technologically adapted methodologies to fully realize the benefits of these systems in diverse healthcare contexts.

We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature on the comparative impact of different techniques for guided surgical excision of non-palpable breast lesions from reports of clinical or patient-reported outcomes and costs.
- Prospective validation and usability evaluation of a mobile diagnostic App for Obstructive Sleep ApneaPublication . Amorim, Pedro; Santos, Daniela Ferreira; Drummond, Marta; Rodrigues, Pedro PereiraObstructive sleep apnea (OSA) classification relies on polysomnography (PSG) results. Current guidelines recommend the development of clinical prediction algorithms in screening prior to PSG. A recent intuitive and user-friendly tool (OSABayes), based on a Bayesian network model using six clinical variables, has been proposed to quantify the probability of OSA. Our aims are (1) to validate OSABayes prospectively, (2) to build a smartphone app based on the proposed model, and (3) to evaluate app usability. We prospectively included adult patients suspected of OSA, without suspicion of other sleep disorders, who underwent level I or III diagnostic PSG. Apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) and OSABayes probabilities were obtained and compared using the area under the ROC curve (AUC [95%CI]) for OSA diagnosis (AHI ≥ 5/h) and higher severity levels (AHI ≥ 15/h) prediction. We built the OSABayes app on ‘App Inventor 2’, and the usability was assessed with a cognitive walkthrough method and a general evaluation. 216 subjects were included in the validation cohort, performing PSG levels I (34%) and III (66%). OSABayes presented an AUC of 83.6% [77.3–90.0%] for OSA diagnosis and 76.3% [69.9–82.7%] for moderate/severe OSA prediction, showing good response for both types of PSG. The OSABayes smartphone application allows one to calculate the probability of having OSA and consult information about OSA and the tool. In the usability evaluation, 96% of the proposed tasks were carried out. These results show the good discrimination power of OSABayes and validate its applicability in identifying patients with a high pre-test probability of OSA. The tool is available as an online form and as a smartphone app, allowing a quick and accessible calculation of OSA probability
- Systematic overview of neuroanatomical differences in ADHD: Definitive evidencePublication . Vieira De Melo, Bruno; Trigueiro, Maria João; Rodrigues, Pedro PereiraObjectives: This article seeks to identify neuroanatomical differences in ADHD through an overview of systematic reviews that report encephalic differences compared to a control group in volume, area, activation likelihood or chemical composition. Methods: We conducted a systematic search using Cochrane guidelines and PRISMA criteria in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects. Results: Results revealed broad encephalic involvement that includes a functional frontal and cingulate hypoactivation and structural differences in corpus callosum, cerebellum and basal nuclei. Conclusions: ADHD symptoms might be due to a multi-network unbalanced functioning hypothesis.
