- Burnout and engagement in portuguese male military officersPublication . Queirós, C.; Teixeira, E.; Marques, AntónioOccupational stress is a contemporary concern due to its negative consequences in workers, especially when chronic, since it can provoke burnout (Freudenberger, 1974; Maslach, 1976). However, engagement is being identified as a possible protector of burnout and occupational stress (Schaufeli et al., 2002). Military officers have a dangerous and stressful activity, factor that is enhancing studies on burnout and engagement in this group (Alarcon et al., 2010; Chambel & Cruz, 2010; Ivie & Garland, 2011).
- Cardiac risk factors and co-morbidities in mental ilnessPublication . Marques, António; Santos, J.; Queirós, C.Persons diagnosed with mental disease have usually inadequate lifestyle, especially sedentary life, lack of physical exercise, cardiac diseases, diets with sugar, lipids, coffee, and also tobacco or drugs abuse (Citrome & Yeomans, 2005; Chuang et al., 2008; Messias & Rondina, 2007). They have also high risk of mortality (Osborn et al., 2006).
- How to reduce self-stigma in schizophrenia? - an intervention through sociodrama and e-learningPublication . Sousa, S.D.; Marques, António; Queirós, C.Self-stigma is a personal response to perceived mental illness stigma (Corrigan & Watson, 2002). Applying recovery to persons with mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, implies working with Self-Stigma, in the sense that is one of the major obstacles to social integration and to active life (Brohan et al., 2011; Corrigan & Kleinlein, 2005; Goffman, 1991). Research on strategies for changing self-stigma can be focus on new and innovative programs, like the one we will present, based on group intervention (sociodrama) and individual intervention (e-learning).
- Proactive coping in schizophrenia: examining the impact of neurocognitive variablesPublication . Rocha, Nuno; Marques, António; Queirós, C.; Rocha, S.Stress-vulnerability models of schizophrenia have long suggested that multiple confluent variables influence disease outcome, including individual vulnerability and environmental factors (Nuechterlein & Dawson 1984). In general, people with schizophrenia tend to employ poor problem-solving strategies, are more likely to adopt passive coping styles, tend to use fewer types of coping strategies and have a propensity to avoid stressors (Thurm & Haefner 1987, Wiedl 1992, Macdonald et al. 1998, Horan & Blanchard 2003, Lysaker et al. 2003).
- Virtual reality and neuropsychology: a cognitive rehabilitation approach for people with psychiatric disabilitiesPublication . Marques, A.; Queirós, C.; Rocha, N.This pilot-study evaluated the feasibility of a 9 month Cognitive Rehabilitation Program – using Virtual Reality and the Integrated Psychological Therapy (IPT) – to improve cognitive functioning in people with schizophrenia. In order to assess the program it was applied (pre and post) the WCST, WAIS-III sub-tests, Stroop Test, and The Subjective Scale to Investigate Cognition in Schizophrenia. Results identified significant differences (p<0.05) between pre and post tests in the subjective and objective assessed cognitive dimensions. The results point out that virtual reality technology and IPT may be a significant resource and intervention methodology in the cognitive remediation of people with psychiatric disabilities.
