At a pedagogical level, methods and techniques are used to stimulate new forms of study where information literacy competences play a decisive role. The rapid changes in society, the unrestrained production of information, the galloping evolution of technologies are challenging for the information services and demand from them constant answers and adaptations. Services are faced with constraints that they try to overcome by inventing and reinventing ways to stay alive within organisations and to respond to users' demands. Information professionals are taking on different roles, developing skills and adapting to the new information age, where digital information reigns and is spread worldwide by rapid communications and sophisticated technological means. In a changing reality, it is urgent to assess whether services are, in the field of information literacy, developing activities that enrich the community and communicate effectively. The purpose of this master thesis is to assess to what extent information services contribute to the development and improvement of information literacy skills in higher education. The work is developed with a quantitative and qualitative approach, in the form of a case study in an observable reality at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto and uses surveys and interviews as data collection techniques. The results of the surveys and interviews reveal that the academic community is not aware of the activities developed by the library and the resources it provides and that there is a low participation in information literacy training activities. Gaps in information literacy skills are detected in relevant areas such as bibliographic research and information ethics. In this context, future perspectives are presented in order to mitigate and combat the shortcomings identified, namely at the level of training planning and marketing.
