- An ERP selection using a hybrid methodologyPublication . Ferreira, Fernanda A.; Pereira, TeresaWith this work, we developed a multi-criteria decision-making model to assess and select an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), using a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA). A hybrid multi-criteria methodology is used for the assessment and selection of an ERP, combining the MMASSI/IT methodology, which is used to both define the relevant family of criteria, based on their features and flexibility to change and adapt to a given scope, and the weight of criteria. Then, the well-known Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology is used to perform the decision-makers’ value function elicitation preference of alternatives pairwise comparison in each criterion. The additive aggregation is used to compute the alternatives global score. The proposed hybrid model was validated in an industrial context by three Decision-makers.
- Analysis and improvement in the Electrical Discharge Machining process used on the manufacturing of moulds for plastics injection mouldingPublication . Costa, A; Pinto Ferreira, Luís; Silva, F. J. G.; Sá, José Carlos; Pereira, Teresa; Ávila, PauloDue to increasing competitiveness in the industry, companies will invariably adopt strategies to ensure that their employees continuously eliminate waste and create more value. This concept was applied at a company that designs, develops, and manufactures steel moulds for the injection of thermoplastics, with the purpose of implementing Lean thinking in the production sector, thus achieving the following objectives: organization of production; preparation of documents to support production, and standardization of graphite stock. Regarding the application of the 5S tool, an improvement in worker safety, and in cleaning was observed, which also led to a reduction in the time wasted when locating tools. Through the implementation of 5S auditing, enabling to verify an overall improvement, from a rating of 35% in the first audit to 85% in the subsequent audit. The tools implemented allowed for improvements in communication between sectors, leading to increased productivity and productive autonomy. Finally, graphite stock was standardized by means of Kanban.
- Analysis of a customer relationship management tool in a shipping companyPublication . Pereira, Teresa; Fróis, Joana; Ferreira, Fernanda A.Today’s society is technologically advanced, the world is just a click away and our companies’ customers have easy access to all the information. Therefore, they are increasingly demanding, wanting more and better at a lower cost. Using as a case study a shipping company, a system of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) was analysed to verify what reasons led to its abandonment and to realise what to do to reverse such situation. In this industry product differentiation is practically null, so the customer’s choice comes down to price. However, customers are paying more attention to customer service, therefore companies are developing stronger relationships with them. The construction of such relationships implies data collection on the client, from which one can offer services of greater value. This may lead to partnerships and competitive advantages. Thus, the use of CRM tools is being promoted for CRM tools present themselves as a valuable asset. In the end, suggestions are presented, ranging from improvements to the existing system, to more complex suggestions, costlier or breaking with the existing mode of relationship and dialogue between company and customers, but that, in the future, will certainly translate into advantages over competing companies.
- Complexity constraint in the distributor’s pallet loading problemPublication . Barros, Hugo; Pereira, Teresa; Ramos, António G.; Ferreira, Fernanda A.This paper presents a study on the complexity of cargo arrangements in the pallet loading problem. Due to the diversity of perspectives that have been presented in the literature, complexity is one of the least studied practical constraints. In this work, we aim to refine and propose a new set of metrics to measure the complexity of an arrangement of cargo in a pallet. The parameters are validated using statistical methods, such as principal component analysis and multiple linear regression, using data retrieved from the company logistics. Our tests show that the number of boxes was the main variable responsible for explaining complexity in the pallet loading problem.
- Guidelines for Machine Tool Sensing and Smart Manufacturing IntegrationPublication . Costa, S.; Silva, Francisco J. G; Campilho, R.D.S.G.; Pereira, TeresaNowadays the Industry is becoming increasingly competitive with the emergence of even more advanced technologies. This environment leads the companies to look for a bigger availability of the assets, a higher quality of the products and consequently less costs. Thus, is because of this purpose that Maintenance is becoming even more fundamental. The focus of this paper was to develop a strategy of Predictive Maintenance on a Machine Tool with the aim of reducing the unplanned stops, increasing the productivity and creating the bases for an Industry 4.0 environment in the short term. Thus, a model has been created in order to fulfil this goal. The first step was the selection of the critical component of the machine tool that would be studied. In the next phase the variables that will be monitored were selected and their trigger limits. Finally, the necessary components to monitor this system were chosen. In order to reach the objective, a system of condition-based maintenance where the acoustic emissions and vibration of the bearing of a machine tool were monitor was proposed.
- Improvement in planning and resource management for an automotive company’s parts feeding systemPublication . Pereira, Teresa; Xavier, Mariana; Ferreira, Fernanda A.; Oliveira, MarisaThe increasing sophistication of the automotive market and the constant change in customer requirements increases companies’ concern to ensure efficient internal logistic flows in line with Just-In-Time philosophy and Lean principles, to deal with wastes and variability. Variability arises from the growing differentiation of products, from the adoption of multi and mixed model assembly lines, and from the uncertainty in customer demand resulting from the worldwide outbreak of COVID-19. Considering the automotive supplier company as research subject, several problems were found to be compromising the efficiency of one of its in-plant parts’ feeding systems, the most critical problem being the lack of planning and management of resources (human and material) needed to perform the logistic service. Through Action-Research methodology stages, the actions taken culminated in the development of a simulation and decision-support tool for the component supply system resource management and efficiency improvement. The simulations made revealed reliable and adjusted results of workload and workforce to face the variations in customer demand and the existing product mix. After the tool creation, resource planning and balancing was no longer based on managers experience and empirical knowledge only but based on scientific knowledge: concise and reliable data from information systems, measurements, study of times, and literature review on in-plant milk run systems, lean, just-in-time and continuous improvement techniques.
- Improving the Multi-Brand Channel Distribution of a Fashion RetailerPublication . Silva, Tiago; Pereira, Teresa; Ferreira, Luís Pinto; Silva, F.J.G.One has seen exponential growth in the number of clients and in the quantities ordered in the fashion retailing multi-brand channel. It has, therefore, become essential to improve the channel’s distribution process in order to meet the customers’ orders in the shortest time, and in a cost-effective manner, thus complying with the delivery terms agreed upon with the market. To this end, one studied aspects such as the mapping of the supply flow process, the occupation of space and the spaghetti-dash diagram of four current distribution process activities. Besides these, one also analyzed the calculation of productivity, cycle times, takt time, as well as the service level designed, with the purpose of preparing a system to evaluate company performance. In addition to these studies, one resorted to the ABC and SWOT customers’ analyses in order to develop the improvement proposal, which was characterized by: (a) changes in the layout, (b) improvements in the supply flow, (c) implementation of gravity carriers, as well as more ergonomic forms of transport, and (d) the use of computer applications developed in Visual Basic language for the distribution process. Based on this proposal, one succeeded in increasing the amount sorted out by the distributor in an eight-hour shift to 294 articles (11,23%). Cycle time was reduced from 0,015 minutes/article to 0,013 minutes/article (13,33%), which allows for the segregation of articles in time for the next collections. In addition, the occupied space was reduced to 47 m2 on average per collection (1,39%), which is translated into a reduction of 1 498 468 meters (23,34%) in the average distance covered per collection. Furthermore, the number of workers was reduced, on average, by five employees (12,82%) per collection. The storage capacity of the finished product was also increased by 535 boxes (11,30%). The total investment needed to achieve these changes is established as being 23 754,42 €; yet, the payback time involved will only be six months, resulting in a cumulative profit of 84 504,23 € by the end of the fall/winter 2020 collection.
- Information systems for industrial processes support and optimizationPublication . Pereira, Teresa; Ferreira, Fernanda A.; Silva, AndréThis paper presents the Document Management Systems (DMS) as a support decision tool to optimize Toyota Caetano Portugal S.A. (TCAP) processes performance. The created systems were developed on the best practices of a Business Project Management (BPM), for better structural implementation. The first system implementation was related to the warehouse materials requirement process, where an excel template with VBA functions for fill automatization was built. It had a reduction of the overall paper consumption and time execution optimization, which means the gain of approximately of 0,10€ and 2,09€ per unit produced, respectively. It was also obtained an elimination of 4538 paper sheets per year. A second system was also developed, in order to provide a Decision Support System (DSS) for documental management. Several User Forms were developed in VBA code in order to provide a flexible and intuitively user interface experience. It reduced the users time decision making and the administrator maintenance, by a total of 26 minutes, corresponding to a 1,61€ reduction per unit built, which means an efficiency increase of 42%. The present work fits in the company's strategy for a more sustainable environment being a positive driver of Industry 4.0 implementation.
- Lean Safety - assessment of the impact of 5S and Visual Management on safetyPublication . Sá, José Carlos; Manuel, V; Silva, F. J. G.; Santos, G; Pinto Ferreira, Luís; Pereira, Teresa; Carvalho, MThis study was developed in a furniture company and aimed to implement some Lean tools, such as 5S and Visual Management to reduce waste, by improving the production process. To carry out this analysis an observation plan was used, having the Spaghetti diagram as a reference as well as the value-added analysis of the operations. The implementation of 5S's allowed the improvement of the visual management and the organization through a reorganization of the layout, as well as normalization of the production process. With this, a reduction of 40% was achieved in terms of waste related to activities that did not add value to the product, such as unnecessary movements, waiting times and even movement of materials, having achieved a level of productivity of 74% and 87% in the finishing and joinery sections, respectively. In addition to improvements in the production process, the impact of the measures at the safety level (lean safety) was assessed. For this purpose, a questionnaire was prepared to assess the opinion of the employees, in which 40% considered that the implementation of the tools provided a greater motivation to develop their work activities safely
