- Determination of maximum acceptable weight of schoolbag carriage in one shoulderPublication . Soares, Helena; Loureiro, Isabel; Silva, Diana; Rodrigues, MatildePain and discomfort are prevalent symptoms among children and adolescents in school age. Carrying heavily loaded schoolbags or carrying it improperly, such as in a single shoulder, has been related to this symptomatology. In view of this, it is important to better understand the students' perceptions about what they consider to be a safe weight to carry.
- Employees' views about the impact of the economic crisis on occupational safety and quality of life: a pilot study in the North of PortugalPublication . Vale, Cláudia; Rodrigues, Matilde; Azevedo, Rui; Ramos, Delfina; Loureiro, IsabelThe European Union faced an economic crisis with a significant expression in Portugal. The financial unsustainability of this country led to austerity measures with negative impacts on organizations and families. The paper aims to analyse the views of the employed population about the influence of crisis on occupational safety, and workers' quality of life. A self-completed questionnaire named External Environment Questionnaire (EEQ) was applied in 2013. A total of 510 questionnaires were filled by Portuguese employees of eight cities from the North of Portugal. The results indicate that the crisis has an important impact in the financial conditions of the workers and an important effect in the job security. Moreover, companies were seen by workers to compromise their safety performance in a crisis period. A strategy to manage safety issues in a crisis context as well as improve the quality of life of workers is needed.
- Problemática associada à utilização de diferentes tipos de mochila para transporte de material escolarPublication . Oliveira, Elsa; Loureiro, Isabel; Rodrigues, Matilde; Vieira da Silva, ManuelaLoad transportation is a common task in young students. They need to move to the schools personal objects, books and other stationery. However, this task can be the cause of musculoskeletal disorders in the students. In view of this, this work aims to characterize the problem of the backpack used by the students and to determine the Maximum Acceptable Weight (MAW) and the Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) for the task of backpack transportation, through a psychophysical approach. Students of the 7º, 8º and 9º classes were included. The study was divided in two different phases. In the first phase it was applied two questionnaires to analyse the problem of the different backpack used by the students. It was analysed issues related with the type of backpack used, its characteristics and students’ routines. The weight of the backpack, as well as the height and weight of 131 students were also determined. The results showed that backpack with two shoulder straps were the most used. However, several students only use one strap. The majority of the students reported to feel pain during the backpack transportation. In the second phase, it was determined the MAW and the RPE with a sample of 10 students. The task was to carrying the backpack with both shoulders, with the straps correctly adjusted to the body, during a pre-defined rout, according to the experimental procedure. The MAW determined by the students was 6.8 kg. The region of the shoulders was identified as presenting more pain during the task. This study emphasizes the need of a better awareness of the students and parents about this problem.
- Schoolbag weight and the postural and psychophysical changes in young students: A pilot studyPublication . Rodrigues, Matilde; Silva, Diana; Silva, Diogo; Santos, Rubim; Monteiro, Pedro; Loureiro, IsabelThis study aims to analyse the applicability of a new experimental procedure to determine bio- mechanical and psychophysical changes in young students, during the schoolbag carriage over one and two shoulders. A pilot study was performed, involving eight male students aged between 12 and 13 years old. Ex- perimental tests were also performed. The students were requested to walk on a treadmill for 10 minutes, with and without the backpack. The load of the backpacks was 10%, 15% and 20% of the students’ body weight (BW). Biomechanical and psychophysical changes were found. The results obtained are interesting to better understand the problem of students carrying heavily loaded schoolbags or carrying them improperly. Still, some limitations to the experimental procedure were pointed out.
- The use of the EQ-5D-5L to assess the perception of health status: an empirical study of users of Termas de Chaves Thermal SpaPublication . Vaz, Márcia; Loureiro, Isabel; Alves, Maria José; Costa, Vânia; Ferreira, Fernanda A.; Fernandes, Paula Odete; Nunes, AlcinaHealth is more than having no diseases. It involves observing and measuring symptoms and emotional, intellectual, spiritual, occupational, social, and physical aspects. Literature shows that thermalists seek thermal spas for health reasons, and their expectations are met as they revisit them. Thermal spa users have perceived an improvement in their health status. The perceived health status is subjective but can contribute to a better understanding of health. Tools like the EQ-5D-5L help measure users’ perception of their health status. The EQ-5D-5L can be applied to measure the perceived quality of life status in various diseases and contexts. However, it has not been applied to thermal spa users. This paper intends to showcase differences between the perceived health status before and after visiting a thermal spa by using the EQ-5D-5L in a survey applied to users of Termas de Chaves. A questionnaire survey was applied on-site from August 09th to December 20th 2021, obtaining a total sample of 222 participants. The data were analysed through statistical techniques of exploratory descriptive and inferential analysis. The results show statistically significant differences in customers’ perception of quality of life before and after 14 days of treatment. In addition, the study of six sociodemographic variables showed that the categories: female, 46 to 55 years old, single, without academic qualifications, retired, and with musculoskeletal pathologies/diseases most benefited from the thermal treatments.
