- Immersive virtual reality for reminiscences: Impact on engagement, neuropsychiatric symptoms and well-being in DementiaPublication . Azevedo, Beatriz Fernandes de; Coelho, Tiago; Campos, CarlosReminiscence therapy (RT) is a widely used non-pharmacological intervention in dementia. Presenting 360° videos enables the recreation of autobiographical experiences in immersive (virtual reality headset) or non-immersive (monitor) formats. This study evaluated the effects of a 360° video-based RT programme, in both formats, on engagement, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and well-being. A crossover experimental design was adopted, in which each participant completed four immersive and four non-immersive sessions, with randomised exposure order and a two-week washout period. In all sessions, observational scales of engagement, well-being, and neuropsychiatric symptoms (apathy and emotional expression) were applied. Twenty-seven people with dementia participated (M = 79.9 years; 66.7% women), mostly with moderate to severe cognitive decline (66.6%). No significant differences were observed between approaches in global measures of engagement and well-being; however, both showed positive results. Significant differences were found in the apathy and emotional expression scales: the immersive format was associated with higher general alertness (p = .035), whereas the non-immersive format resulted in higher expressions of pleasure (p = .026) and sadness (p = .010). The immersive approach showed good tolerability and greater self-reported motivation. We conclude that 360° video-based RT differs by format: immersiveness is mainly associated with greater attention/alertness, whereas the non-immersive format favours emotional and communicative expression, possibly due to the therapist’s visibility during the session.
