- Os direitos audiovisuais no futebol – consequências da centralização, determinantes da procura e performance financeira dos clubes. O caso portuguêsPublication . Alves, Hugo Manuel Pereira de Oliveira; Pereira, Cláudia Maria FerreiraThe current situation in Portugal regarding the discussion about the audiovisual and multimedia football tv rights selling model makes this a relevant topic. The Portuguese government has imposed a mandatory centralized selling model of these rights to be adopted until 2028, hoping to achieve a better balance in the distribution of revenues by clubs, a better balance of sports competitions, and increase market competition. Liga Portugal has defended that the centralization will produce an overall increase in revenues, as well as an increase in the competitiveness of its main league and of the national clubs externally. This dissertation mainly intends to empirically validate these goals. By collecting data on the revenues obtained by "La Liga" and "Serie A", championship’s where the change to a centralized model has occurred, it´s intended to investigate in which direction is likely to vary the overall value of the revenues to be obtained by centralized sales in Portugal. Also, by observing the performance of the teams in these competitions, the aim is to confirm (or not) the expectations of increased competitiveness, as well as the impact on the economic and financial performance of football clubs. Furthermore, data for a larger sample of European clubs was obtained in order to allow for greater statistical robustness and relevance of the results. Finally, it is sought to model live TV football matches demand in Portugal, identifying its main drivers. The results of the research produced suggest an improvement in the competitiveness of "Serie A" and "La Liga" after the change of the TV rights selling model from individual to centralized. As for the competitiveness of the clubs of these competitions externally (competitions organized by UEFA), before and after this change in selling model, the results obtained do not allow to conclude in one direction, to the extent that in the case of "Serie A" there was an improvement in clubs’ financial performance, while for "La Liga" the opposite occurred. As for the expected effect on the club’s financial performance after changing from an individual to a centralized selling model, the results obtained were mixed, not allowing unequivocal conclusions. If, on the one hand, the results obtained for "La Liga" reveal to be statistically non-significant and of divergent sign, on the other hand, in the case of "Serie A", the results are statistically significant and point out to an improvement in the financial performance of the clubs after the adoption of the centralized selling model, despite the limitations resulting from the small sample size and consequent loss of statistical robustness. When analyzing data for a larger sample of European football clubs, the results suggest that this effect may be negative after all. Overall, the results obtained confirm liquidity, indebtedness, and the ratio of staff costs to total operating income, as determinants for the measurement of clubs’ financial performance, confirming previous literature findings. Regarding the main drivers for live TV football demand in Portugal, the study that was intended to be carried out was hampered by limitations in data collection. Hence, the study was adjusted to the available information. The results obtained signal a preference, unsurprisingly, of football fans and consumers on TV in Portugal for matches involving the so-called "big 3" teams. Furthermore, the results suggest a small media advantage for SLB over its two main rivals.
