Abstract(s)
The role of Operational Assistants (OA) in schools involves a progressive increase in their skills which progressively appear to be more comprehensive in intervention with students. It is with these that students often seem to have closer contact, with relationships of greater intimacy and confidentiality being frequent. On the other hand, these professionals are often interveners in various situations that collaborate in facilitating and promoting the educational process. From this finding, the problem identified was “How are operational assistants determining the students' educational process?” whose objective is to better understand the real potentiality of the Operational Assistants’ professional activity and its contribution as members of a school community. For the development of this project we used three inquiries’ surveys, which sought to know the opinion of the AO, teachers and students, at Soares dos Reis Artistic School, about the Operational Assistants’ professional class regarding the degree of knowledge about rights and duties, the perception of competences and the performance of Operational Assistants in different situations. From the results analysis obtained in terms of the statistical measures variance and median, it is concluded that teachers and students consider that the Operational Assistants are fundamental for the development of the school year, although they do not act accordingly (they do not give them the value that recognize that they have). Operational Assistants are thus “a human resources, with fundamental importance to the educational system functioning” (Decree Order nr. 29 of 2015). This study was aimed at Operational Assistants as professionals from the EASR school community. It would be interesting to study this problem at national level given the scarcity of studies in our country on these professionals. In this way it would be possible to characterize and collect information in a more concrete and broader way, taking into account the different realities in Portuguese schools.
