Abstract(s)
Portugal, over the last few years, has been experiencing demographic changes, characterized by an increase of the proportion of the elderly population, as well as the increase of older people living alone. Sometimes this situation causes problems associated with loneliness and social isolation. In this context, measures have been taken with regard to active aging and social integration of the elderly. The social intervention project “Vínculos entre pessoas, novos raios de luz na vida" [Bonds between people, new rays of light in life] was developed with a group of 12 elderly people and a group of volunteers constituted by scouts, following the methodological guidelines of Participatory Action-Research methodology. The main goal was the improvement of the quality of life of older people, by fighting loneliness and social isolation, promoting an active participation in the community and reinforcing feelings of self-esteem and self-worth. For the development of this project, various research techniques and intervention strategies were used. Frequent home visits were made. Through reality analysis and context evaluation, in order to make the project more sustainable and to ensure its continuity, the creation of a group of volunteers was considered and, after the exploration of the community resources, the scouts were involved. Three actions were developed, with which the goals were achieved and made this project significant in the participants' lives, as it contributed to a better quality of life, by reducing the feeling of loneliness, the situation of social isolation and improving their self-worth.
