Abstract(s)
Tourism offers both advantages and disadvantages to the involved countries. Increasing challenges, in particular environmental ones, have forced the activity's impact to diminish, taking into account the principle of sustainable development, an approach that seeks to reduce negative impacts and increase its benefits. In this context, Ecotourism emerges as a tourism segment based on the principles of sustainable tourism, oriented to the preservation of nature, respect for local traditions and customs, interest in the history and culture of the destination, encouragement of intercultural communication and aid to the local economy. As the term “Ecotourism” is often misused, this study aims to understand how students of Tourism at the Porto Polytechnic Institute know and define it. Additionally, it aims to understand how many of these students have participated in typology activities and the reasons that led them to do so (if that’s the case). For this purpose, a questionnaire was prepared, distributed in the classroom and online, and 123 responses were collected (44% of the total students). The results showed that 23% of students know the four basic principles of Ecotourism and about half of them have experience in the practice of ecotourism. The main motivation is related to "Contact with nature".
