Abstract(s)
The present work explores aspects of extended techniques and prepared piano, with major focus on the composers Henry Cowell, John Cage, George Crumb and Marisa Rezende. The low availability of bibliographic references in portuguese language related to the extended techniques, prepared piano and multiple matters of the subject encouraged this research. With the goal of gathering and synthesizing the information, by delving into practial examples, the basis was works by key figures that influenced the use of these techniques in piano composition in a definite way. The research results are here presented under three perspectives. The theoretical perspective reflects about different topics, such as the translation issues of the term extended techniques to Portuguese and a systematization of the piano components and its operation. The theoretical-practical perspective has the classification and examples of some of the most common techniques, together with videos of their execution, as well as indications for their good practise, among which precautions to take with the instrument. By last, the most practical perspective reflects about the techniques used in the works interpreted on the final recital of Projeto Artístico of the Mestrado em Interpretação Artística, namely the encountered difficulties and how they were overcome.
